In a weird way with the advent of social media this is happening at scale that is unprecedented The other weird thing is all of our preferences are starting to converge; go to Italy in the summer if you are in the US, go to Venice, get a house, get the same instagram ad furniture, wear lulu lemon Unconsciously were being herded, dangerous if you are not present

I did swing for a bit and one of my teachers lamented about how all the styles converged and became less interesting post globalization era. It used to be eclectic and unique, they said.

I could never be herded. I always seem to go my own way. Lone wolf, I am. (little howl) But if WE followed the herd, then we wouldn't be on farcaster, would we? Although, it's nice to meet other lone wolves to have a small pack. People you can relate to. Sometimes it's difficult to find.

absolutely, it's incredibly concerning. I think this is the result of algorithmic feeds in social media. No longer are we actually being shown what we have selected (via follows) but we are being shown what an inhuman creation (ai ML algorithm) thinks will increase watch time, thereby increasing advertising revenue. I think we may need to see more development of closed or exclusive communities where people are given information directly that opt into, rather than being fed it constantly by a literal feed

we're overfitting on some kind of stress. makes me wonder if the opposite is also true, that unstressed social media is unbound (therefore undervalued) preference.

The most popular national parks often disappoint me because of the large crowds and the need to book far in advance. Everyone wants to go to the same places, it seems. OTOH, by attracting so many people, it leaves many lesser-known parks, national forests, and BLM lands under utilized, so I've learned to love those famous national parks.

I don't think is necessarily a new thing, though. We've been manipulated for a long time. Curtis talks about this in one of his documentaries, can't remember the one. I think the concerning thing for me is the subtle replacement of choice by suggestion based on analysis of our likes, and sold to us as advancement that potentially could lead us to a place where we don't know whether we're choosing things freely because we actually do like them or because we think we must like them because they're being suggested to us.

This is true on many levels. Perhaps the term for it could be Attention Capture. I find the most dangerous form of this is in politics; if the average person states their position on any issue there is a very high chance that you can predict their position on most other political issues - heterodox thinking is becoming more rare. This is dangerous bc it indicates two things: that people "download" their political views from somewhere, instead of coming to conclusions based on their life experience, reading, etc. It also means that we're diminishing our capacity for sensemaking and our ability to successfully respond to crises. Think what could have happened if during the Cuban Missile Crisis instead of having a "field" of options to choose from JFK's advisors could only come up with 2-3 choices due to ideological Attention Capture. Very dangerous indeed.

I think that's why Kyle Chayka advocated for people to become conaiseurs of something. As it implies you need to go much deeper and take a much more active role in finding things. I had a similar discussion with a friend once, on how do you know if you actually like this or is it just because everyone else does? Breaking out of Filterworld is hard.

definitely important to consistently recalibrate and to look up, be present, and make sure you are being intentional. Otherwise, it’s very easy to be influenced by algorithms and societal norms.

This has always been the case, because most people don't actively cultivate their taste. There's nothing wrong with that because people have to deal with real issues like family situations or health concerns. Just because you follow a trend because it's easy doesn't make it wrong or even bad. The whole "the world is full of sheep" narrative steam rolls a lot of important nuance in day to day life and also ignores the general tendency of power law distribution of winners IMHO.
