"Perhaps it's because with a protocol, there's an aesthetic of anonymity. Protocols are essentially nobody. They organize without revealing themselves, acting as hosts for things other than themselves. They simultaneously create freedom while governing. Also, most of the time — in art, at least — we don't talk about protocols because they are behind things. They are the worlds behind the world that silently organize our lives, life itself. Protocols are somewhat akin to anonymous power; it’s seductive and could be scary. So I'd say we engage in protocol art because we have an affinity for the aesthetic of protocols, and there is an aesthetic because there is a poetry of protocols." https://www.rightclicksave.com/article/the-aesthetic-of-a-protocol

👋 hi all, my name is Timber – I help coordinate /sop, a protocol research community! Big fan of Farcaster and I love sports, chess, cooking and the outdoors. Currently based in Montreal. Also go follow @sach, he’s got a wicked sense of humor (and is an SoP alum). Photo creds to the illustrious @ted 🫡

"Protocol art relies heavily on technical literacy and, as a result, is often perceived as hermetic. The blockchain is not a distribution channel for images but rather the material of the art itself." h/t @isthisanart https://worldcomputersculpture.garden/essay

Interested in SoP, but not sure how to contribute? Have ideas about research? Got relevant expertise burning a hole in your pocket? Like the newsletter? I’m collecting feedback to make all things SoP better, and would love to hear from you: https://forum.summerofprotocols.com/t/request-for-feedback/1678/2

Fukuyama nailed it when he said that the pursuit of personal health and safety would come to define American politics.
