Why does crypto not have more consumer apps? Because it currently does not solve many problems for consumers. Crypto has strong consumer product-market fit with speculative use cases. This is because it’s a) potential to make money quickly b) entertainment. The way to grow the number of consumers in crypto is increase the amount of entertainment in crypto apps. Consumers have unlimited demand for novel entertainment.

I completely agree. The real world is far removed from crypto, and it is very difficult to onboard new users by selling them crypto itself (most of them don’t like speculation). We should offer something else—something cool and fun!

When I hear this take, I often wonder what are the web2 social apps which are so popular? Beyond socials > Snapchat, TikTok, instagram/Facebook, X Streaming Music/Video > YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music. Gaming for sure… after that what? Especially for apps which become daily or weekly, embedded into our lives. Sometimes I think the table is already quite full. Still think gaming has most short term potential globally.

have you seen this chart today from coingecko? LOL, raydium dominate 83% of the DEX volume, and radium is known for meme coins trading platform. so yes entertainment seems to hit peak or on the way there, it used to be payment ... still is but now seems overtaken by memes. the thing is, people should probably used meme coin as a catalyst something bigger. Didn't Bitcoin is like the original meme coin? and look now what have become. i don't understand why serious founder does not want to use this strategy, like defi token but having a meme coin - not saying to defraud the end users but more like take advantage of this culture shift. why the founders is too serious now? They think meme coins are below them. (reminds me of chamath line :). Got to embrace the culture friends ...

I still think the basic crypto as a payment method is undervalued. Working with watches you hear load of stories of people getting paid for a watch and then the bank taking back the money because they say it wasn’t them who made the payment. Resulting in seller losing watch and the money. Give me crypto over bank payment any day

Crypto's story in consumer apps is too technical for the average person. The "X for crypto" app looks too much like its non-crypto counterpart for widespread adoption. We need new experiences that can only be powered by crypto. This is why I love projects like Nouns. What's its non-crypto alternative?

This is actually true! But prior to now, the cost of being in crypto was a heavy deterrent, also the “selling point” of crypto has always been financial. Getting into crypto means set up wallet with some funds, pay x in gas fees Once we can separate crypto from being solely financial, we’ll make progress and also now that cost is down(thanks to L2s), we might just be heading there.

I think there’s more that can be built on a decentralised social graph beyond just entertaining consumer apps. Biggest unlock I see is under collateralized lending.

Need more new ways to create content or users to consume, not just repacked web2 methods on crypto rails. Solve a core problem for creators and/or consumers

the hard part is that people are entertained even without crypto as backend. to most of them the blockchain is not a need to be entertained. centralised systems just work for them.

Merchants passing on the credit card processing fee to consumers is becoming more and more prominent. This is a real pain that people face. My hope is that paying with USDC is made so easy that it can take off. This needs a masterful GTM strategy.

what if crypto doesn't need to solve problems for consumers what if it just needs to be best-in-class infra for developers i don't even think developers think of blockchains as part of their toolkit, as most of the infra/SDKs are vaporware, constantly changing, shut down, etc. sigh

I think your speculation point is a very US centric view of crypto. In places like Argentina and Venezuela adoption was not driven only by speculation but by need because of inflation. In some areas adoption has been because of cross border payments. Honestly I think there are not more consumer apps because crypto is hard - UI/UX hasn’t been a focus, challenges such as offramp, lack of focus on language (English centric) and regional solutions. That is why I am excited about products like @bandocool . Would love others to chime in @chaps @lalocripto @launamu @carlosjmelgar @nicnode @troopdegen.eth

of the core drives ( food/shelter, connection, status, etc. dunno all, a16z has a better write up of it) think entertainment/novelty is sort of catch all for a prod/service lacking pmf, so weaker. If we go w it, what prob w entertainment does crypto solve? how does it enable folks to be entertained better/faster/cheaper?

I agree with you. But it is difficult to think of entertainment that only crypto can provide that consumers will use beyond the hassle The key words are reliability, transparency, and traceability, although the meanings overlap?
