Brassicas are notoriously sweeter after fall frosts as they increase sugar levels to act as a natural anti-freeze to help them get through the winter and produce seeds in the spring. Texture is often an indicator of quality. Nature develops complexity when presented with abundance. Leaves are biological “factories” with transportation networks.

My reading arc… post college when I first started farming I would only read agricultural books, except to read fiction over the holidays. A few years back my ratio switched to primarily fiction with a bit of ag sprinkled in. Only audio books were in the car w/ kids. https://warpcast.com/brixbounty/0x82b9f4ec

Stopped by the butcher this morning to grab a roast… and they had a perfect sized tenderloin. Wasn’t initially planning on a “celebratory” roast today but decided why not? Onions were a compliment to the meal, to bring a bit more flavor to the plate. Here they are a few minutes of in > sautéed them 25min…

Overcast weekend, raining today so we skipped a family hike. Youngest two went to a trampoline park for a bday party (always a good time). Patriots won a miserable match against the Jets. And I decided to launch us into soup season with Potato Leek Soup. Simple comforts. When I was a bachelor …

Sunset harvests, migrating geese just overhead after this photo. Made me think of one of my favorite books I’ve read with the kids. “The Wild Robot” series by Peter Brown, which was a favorite of our middle child. Good read aloud for ~ 2nd-3rd graders > https://www.peterbrownstudio.com/books/the-wild-robot/

88 degrees here on the Southcoast of Massachusetts today… we started harvesting Butternut squash. September weather can be funny like that, patiently waiting for this week’s heat to pass so we can get back to fall transplanting. Reckon Friday PM and Saturday for planting.

Drizzly morning… setting on the tomato blossoms. These are a very late planting. Mountain Magic is a solid late season variety for folks on the eastern seaboard, thanks to its strong late blight resistance. Won’t go toe to toe with a peak season heirloom, though they have pretty good flavor for salads and such.

Crunchy King Radish, prized for its capacity to size up while maintaining terrific quality. A little touch of boron in the fertility mix maintains good cell structure and keeps pithiness at bay. Ready for the butter and Fleur de Sel if that’s your style.
