Driving is kind of boring too, but I don't mind it for the same reason as going to the gym: I can listen to podcasts while doing something productive

Nobody can resist hormones, hormones are released when you work hard enough, we like those hormones -> show me someone who says the above and I'll show you someone who's never tried that hard

I’m always happy when people to find more reasons to move, but I don’t think they need to yuck lifters’ yum in order to do it lol

Long term vs short term enjoyment IMO. Exercise for the sake of it CAN be boring, but some people get hooked on the feeling of putting in consistent effort and making progress. Playing sports or doing other activities is also valid. Anything that gets you moving is great in my book

I’m sure this applies to some people but I doubt that people who struggle with exercising are struggling because they tried it, thought “this is boring and not fun”, and then stopped

Yeah... fair enough. Getting to the point where the standard "workouts" (running/weights) was fun took me quite a while. Would be nice if I was also socializing and playing, but that requires coordinating my schedule to others

i get the take tbh for exercise, going from 0 -> 1 is waaaaaaay harder than 1 -> 10 i "worked out" inconsistently for years, but it wasn't until my first soulcycle class in 2016 where something just clicked. i was sweating and it was fun

I agree. I never had a gym membership until I was 38. Only got it out of necessity. Prior to that, I was always on a bike, driving a pedicab, skating, bouldering etc. Exercising was always fun and I was in killer shape.

different strokes for different folks plus what you do / can do changes as you age the bigger problem with that post is that it perpetuates the myth of gym and weight loss it's 90% diet -- i say this as someone who's been cultivating mass for my entire life

Generally agree with gyms being boring (treadmills, even weightlifting), not the vanity bits (though I haven’t been to one in over a decade) My primary exercise is BJJ which is basically playtime Lift kettlebells at home but not very exciting

To me exercise is when I catch up with podcasts or friends’ music recommendations. It’s also a chance to reset after work. 9/10 times I feel better physically and mentally after a workout.

OP misunderstands exercise. Exercise is preparation for life—exercise is movement; movement is life. Being stronger, more mobile, more in control expands what you can do in the world and lets you do it better. Play is instantly normalised upon understanding exercise as a life-enhancing activity—as life itself

mindfully lifting weights after a proper warm up fully being present for good form, controlled breathing, and a nice stretch at the end is a great joy of life

I agree. For me it is also boring. And I love the idea of play. When I used to play soccer 5 times a week, the cardio I got was incredible. But I got bored of it. I’m all in for new games. I’m so looking forward for 3D Fortnite or something like that, that will require us to train mind and body to be good at.
