Any tips on how I can resurrect and re-season a cast iron pan? Tried avocado oil in the oven but didn’t seem to do anything

mom said - use 2 spoons Sodium carbonate and 2 spoons of lemon salt and small cup of vinegar and half a cup of liquid soap in hot water and let this pan in it for a while and then clean it

If you want to do it right, steel wool and soap, then just season with sunflower oil for a few hours in the oven at the highest temperature. But you could probably just scrape most of that off with water and a brush and continue to use without reseasoning

never done it myself but if your oven has a “self clean” option, that is hot enough to strip it and start over

I scrub with steel wool and dish soap. A little vinegar if there’s any rust. Then add oil in a thin layer and bake it at high heat for at least 15 mins. Then when it cools add another thin layer of oil and bake it again. Apparently if you do it enough times it gets crazy nonstick but I don’t have the patience.

We use this to clean the pan and get up the bits burnt to the pan and I use soap as well when it looks like this. Afterwards Heat/ apply small bit of oil and clean with paper towels. When the paper towels are no longer black and are have no black when you wipe it’s ready to use again. The season will come over time as you cook with love

Hey Colin! Try using flaxseed oil and bake it at 450F degrees for an hour. Repeat a few times if necessary. Good luck!

what @danielsinclair said. Cast irons are basically apocalypse proof, if you have steel wool, dish soap, bacon/oil and an oven. Re-season a few times for good measure, after a "heavy" scrub.

I rejuvenated my cast iron pan by calcining it on the hob with salt. To do this, put the pan on the fire and pour a thick layer of coarse or medium salt, turn down the heat and leave it for 20-25 minutes. Remove the blackened salt by wiping the inside of the cast iron pan with an oiled cloth.

A lot of good advice here on glazing but you need to strip off the top layer first. Bake it in the oven for a few hours at 400+ degrees and scrape off the gunk when the pan is cooler. Don't worry about scratching because you will reseason it again. I like grapeseed oil because it has a high smoke point. Let us know how you do

First, remove the dirt thoroughly with detergent. Next, heat over medium heat, and when warmed up, cook the whole thing thoroughly over high heat for 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and wait until it cools down naturally. When cool, add a cup of oil and heat over low heat for 3 minutes Then transfer the oil to another container and wipe with kitchen paper to brush the oil
