imo buying an S tier .com for your startup for $1.8m is great if you can afford it contrarian, wins the battle for attention, can be sold for cash if needed will not get you to pmf on it's own but it's not as stupid as some people make it to be

see your point. But it still seems like a risky investment for many startups.

buying one on a monthly payment plan like they did is smart. (buying upfront would not be, because cannot actually be sold for cash easily. domains are illiquid assets, so if u tried to sell eg friend.com quickly you might get much less than you paid)

this is the correct take. $1.8M is actually lower than i'd have thought for a domain that premium...

its on a payment plan so not as risky as it seems. co will either raise more money before they pay it all or go under. however its hard to sell in practice bc company email and backlinks all go to that url. so its not the kind of thing you can sell to keep the co afloat in an emergency.

Unless you are very rich when you are a startup It's more common to see companies acquire these domains after achieving significant growth, as in the cases of Notion and Dune

Seems like a good use of resources, has stated its on installment. Some startups require massive capital (read farms) to even start producing. In a post industrial service economy eyes and attention are valued. The back and forth beef with Nik who rapped about Avi may be a different thing…

it's on some financing, so maybe not liquidatable. if there's ad revenue, then one of these accessory startups will be faustian enough to give away personal data. device-wise, maybe a 2x markup? if that's enough to bootstrap the gopro version of this, maybe it's a viable strategy. otherwise, it's a pathos gambit (like the domain) & risk of rinse is much higher.

I actually don’t see it as contrarian at all it’s a pretty old school basic money spend. Also think .com’s won’t appreciate that much relatively in an AI/search world. Lastly I find this even stranger for non platforms. supercast .com I can understand because users are going to the app url daily to use it, sharing links from it etc. Friend .com is just a landing site for a hardware product. Visits isn’t even a core KPI I assume. Would rather buy a warehouse and 20 Tesla bots to manufacture these. Can also be sold for cash w/o confusing users when your domain disappears. Also news worthy

I mean if it wasn’t more than 90% of the startup money then maybe? But this feels like saying: Buying a Bugatti La Voiture Noir for the founder of warpcaster will make warpcaster a better product because it gives @dwr.eth attention
