Is there a reasons that produce is so much worse in America compared with Europe? When I’m in the U.S. eating a tomato tastes like nothing and you just have to use your imagination whereas anywhere around the Mediterranean it tastes like having a psychedelic experience.

Hmmm. California farmers market produce is as good as anywhere in the world imo. Also the most diversity.

I've found tomatoes to be a great indicator of fruit quality. After talking with farmers and merchants: - If you water them too much to speed up production, taste goes down. - If you have to ship them, you usually harvest them before they are ready, which means taste is usually absent (remember, color, taste and aroma are there to attract insects and animals when the fruit is ready to be eaten, not before). So, the closer you are to the location of production, the better fruits tend to taste. Also, perfect, round, uniformly colored, impeccable fruits indicate "industrial" grade production, i.e. lots of water, artificial sun, sometimes little or no soil and early harvesting.

Earl Butz agriculture secretary in the 1970s https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Butz Produce in USA is optimized for appearance like size and color and lack of blemishes, and for resilience to be shipped in a truck across the country for a couple days before getting on a shelf. Not flavor or nutrition.

In North America, fruits and vegetables are shipped too far. Harvested before they’re ripe. Sometimes dyed or pumped up with water. You have to eat local, in-season stuff or else it’s pretty gross. I don’t eat tomatoes because they taste of nothing at all.

GMO i can always tell a difference in a “real” garden grown tomato as it is tastier and juicier. https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2015/feeding-the-world/

basically the soil in the US is much worse and poorer. climate difference. Recently, vegetables in western Europe have been much worse than in eastern Europe. When I lived in Italy and Spain, I dreamed of tomatoes from Bulgaria and Turkey.

Honestly it’s because people here don’t care. They’d rather have a cheap tomato than a good one. If you want consistently good produce in North America go to Québec.

depends where you are in the US and where you shop. Farmers markets in Cali are some of the best produce you'll find anywhere. Especially central Cali.
