I've found tomatoes to be a great indicator of fruit quality. After talking with farmers and merchants:
- If you water them too much to speed up production, taste goes down.
- If you have to ship them, you usually harvest them before they are ready, which means taste is usually absent (remember, color, taste and aroma are there to attract insects and animals when the fruit is ready to be eaten, not before).
So, the closer you are to the location of production, the better fruits tend to taste. Also, perfect, round, uniformly colored, impeccable fruits indicate "industrial" grade production, i.e. lots of water, artificial sun, sometimes little or no soil and early harvesting. 4 replies
