Is there a reasons that produce is so much worse in America compared with Europe? When I’m in the U.S. eating a tomato tastes like nothing and you just have to use your imagination whereas anywhere around the Mediterranean it tastes like having a psychedelic experience.

I've found tomatoes to be a great indicator of fruit quality. After talking with farmers and merchants: - If you water them too much to speed up production, taste goes down. - If you have to ship them, you usually harvest them before they are ready, which means taste is usually absent (remember, color, taste and aroma are there to attract insects and animals when the fruit is ready to be eaten, not before). So, the closer you are to the location of production, the better fruits tend to taste. Also, perfect, round, uniformly colored, impeccable fruits indicate "industrial" grade production, i.e. lots of water, artificial sun, sometimes little or no soil and early harvesting.

For example, some of the best tomatini you will ever taste come from the volcanic island of Santorini in Cyclades, where the soil is rich in minerals and salt. They are amazing.
