I seem to be earning more Moxie these days, but the price of Moxie is also going down a lot. I suppose it evens out.

That would be a promising change. For all my expressed skepticism about crypto I do think Moxie is a very promising product. If someone could find a way to make using social media economically productive in a sustainable manner that would indeed be a game changer. This is why I keep an open mind and continue to stay abreast of developments in the technology.

One key to success that I have experienced in my own life is not going out too much unnecessarily. This is by no means a call to become antisocial, but it takes a lot of time at home to really accomplish long-term goals. You need to think, work, save money, and do all the things that are only possible with a bit of seclusion. I'm at home a lot and I try to only go out for meetings, exercise, errands, and limited socializing once or twice a week. I also go for walks with my wife but I still consider that part of my home life. This is not to say don't go out: You should and must do that in moderation. But leave a healthy amount of time for yourself at home and you'll see your productivity and knowledge increase.

Speaking fluent English is such a privilege in the present day. King of languages. I speak a few other languages but I can’t say any of them are nearly as useful. Persian would’ve been useful 200 years ago but now it’s basically something to impress people at parties. The fact that almost everyone in Europe seems to speak English has also demotivated me from learning other European languages even though some are beautiful on their own terms. I can understand French I just don’t feel a pressing need to finish studying it.

One of the ways the traditional finance keeps front running crypto is by continuing to innovate on their own part. The idea of being able to pay someone as easily as sending a text message is one of the most alluring parts of the crypto story but you no longer need crypto to do that. You can pay someone just as easily with Zelle or Venmo and if you screw it up by accident, get locked out, or are hacked there’s an institution there to help you. That naturally sounds better to most people and it also allows you to transact with a stable U.S. dollar as opposed to a wildly fluctuating cryptocurrency. The only thing they can’t really front run is Bitcoin since it has some monetary characteristics that make it unique thanks to the Proof of Work. But otherwise I expect fintech to continue advancing and building all the promised benefits of crypto into their existing systems. I expect a bank-based payment platform divorced from phone numbers in the way that Signal no longer uses phone numbers to emerge soon.

“The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that unnamed U.S. and European officials determined in recent days that Iran has delivered ballistic missiles to Russia in what would be a first for the growing military partnership of the two anti-Western allies. Prior to the WSJ story, Bloomberg and Reuters published reports on Monday and on Aug. 10 respectively, citing unnamed European officials as saying an Iranian transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia was imminent.” I’m skeptical Iran and Russia have much of an alliance rather than short term tactical cooperation. When crypto starts crashing, I consider buying it. This has nothing to do with my beliefs about its future utility or social benefit but I do believe it is like a rollercoaster that you should learn to ride and capitalize upon. I’m converting my 401K into Bored Apes and selling my home for farmland and logging rights in the metaverse.

“The Lancet medical journal recently published an estimate of deaths in Gaza from several respected scientists, who outline their process of estimation (comparison with similar conflicts) and final numbers. They estimate that about 186,000 total deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza, which is roughly 7.9% of its population, by mid-June 2024. This high number is despite various ceasefire agreements over the past six months. If deaths continue at this rate – about 23,000 a month – there would be an additional 149,500 deaths by the end of the year, some six and half months from the initial mid-June estimate.
