I got into a huge fight today with someone who believes Elon is this free speech savior. I don’t I think he is censorious just in the opposite direction And more than that .. you know, it’s his right to do that. He owns the place. Parag ran it how he wanted and now Elon can too. You’re in their house you play by their rules. It’s not offensive in either direction actually Having access to a Facebook/YouTube/Twitter/Instagram account is a nice to have It’s not some inalienable right. We lived most of our lives without these things, and you are absolutely free to go say slurs or spew anti semitism or whatever you want, on your own website or in your own home. Or I guess now, in the Elon Regime, it’s say “cisgender”

Ironically this is why Bluesky feels so overindexed the other way It seems like a protest vote with bits of decentralization that don’t trigger anti-crypto sentiment

Arguably it's much worse as a private co than a public one. Parag was accountable to the board, shareholders, etc. Musk has some accountability with his private investors but he has enough resources (which he has been known to divert from his other companies) where he can tell them to pound sand.

True. However, the difference i see beyond a clear the political shift, is that he’s a private citizen censoring based on his own beliefs Before twitter censorship was not only censoring based on their personal beliefs but also censoring at the will of governments Sucks people are so cultish about him tho

he was the free speech savior only in the sense that he saved a platform people wanted to use to speak freely, but who couldn’t because of previous leadership. it’s free speech from the limited perspective of the bubble/system he/they are in. I agree with your broader point

A few years back we went through global lockdowns and many of us were banned from physically meeting together. Places like Twitter suddenly took on importance as a way for people to discover, communicate and co-ordinate a response to some of the extreme regulations we faced. That's when private company censorship became a problem, IMO.

I def don't believe he is a free speech savior. As long as we have ©, we don't have free speech. © is ©ensorship and X still has it. That being said, at least I don't get banned on there anymore for posting science.

In my view, Elon's concept of free speech may inadvertently undermine the very essence of free speech.

Elon is definitely not a savior, but at least there is less censorship of differing opinions across the board. The internet should be off limits to censorship regimes. Maybe the younger generation doesn't understand what the internet has represented, or the bootlickers just want to take control and limit speech that may shed light on their corruption. Why would anyone want the internet to be a digital, dystopia where you cannot freely speak/associate. The internet can either represent the pinnacle of freedom, of free thought and expression...or be a tool for absolute power/control. I know which one I would choose.

The funny part is he knows how Farcaster works. There were a number of tweets of him asking where @vitalik.eth went when he was exclusively on Farcaster, so someone had to have filled him in. If he was truly free speech, he'd convert X to use Farcaster on the back end and support real decentralized social networks.
