you are an early stage founder and you *have* to make one — and only one — non-technical hire. what role or type of person do you choose?

Ops generalist. Done it before, always the right move. You need a Swiss Army knife that can multiply your own efforts.

The first non-technical hire would very much depend on market, market dynamics, your differentation. Are you in a hyper-competitive space? What matters more? Product? Or hyper-fast distribution? Are you a consumer business where brand matters? A simple rule of thumb: Hire for your blindspots.

A person who can manage communities of enthusiasts, which become fertile grounds for finding people for hiring or investment and getting consumer insights from unforced conversations. Helps with market research too. Bonus if the person knows how to identify & have the first conversation with investor/potential hires!

I would go with someone with marketing background but more importantly I would hire someone who believes in the team and idea. First hires are hard.
