Wow to The Higher Running club and its members! Over 100 have joined the Strava run group. Ty @kugusha.eth Good luck as they take on the higher run challenge too! Would like to share a small thread below in the comments to help anyone interested in running or starting out from the lessons I've learned ⬇️

These are a few things I have learned from my humble running adventures. About 8 years ago after a life time of playing sport I noticed I was unfit. Sore knees. So I started walking everywhere and then I started running. I hope these points might help you :-)

1. Start slow. Ideally walk a few hundred metres before you start to run. build up your pace gradually but also slow down as you see fit. Don't start off at a break neck pace - you won't sustain it and will make for a miserable experience

2. Build up your distance and endurance. Youre building up your fitness and strength. Don't run 10/ 20km straight off the bat. Make a goal and dream big - say in one week or 2 weeks I will run 5k in 2 months 10k. But work yourself up to it. Everyone's goals are individual. But we all should gradually work to reach them

3. You won't regret going for a run but you will regret not going - commitment and conviction. Aim higher. Get out there. 1 day is better than 0 days

4. Protein drinks. A decent whey protein isolate is good for recovery building strength and muscle. Ashwaghanda is great for endurance too. Make sure you drink fluids and hydrate well especially in heat. A simple banana is great for after a run.

5. Don't run after youve eaten. Allow a few hours after meals. You can feel heavy and lethargic

6. Shoes a good secure fit. Not loose but definitely not too tight. They neednt be expensive. Esp for beginners - a great work horse is the Nike Pegasus and previous iterations the 39 and 40 should be available quite cheap. I ran in a 39 doing a 10k a day January 3 years ago - so I can vouch for them.

7. Don't beat yourself up. This isn't chariots of fire. There are going to be hard days. Days you feel heavy your legs feel like concrete - grand through them - you will be glad you did. There is satisfaction in doing so.

7cont. It's absolutely acceptable to demand more of yourself - i encourage it - but don't be harsh on yourself on the bad days - battle through them and look to tomorrow.

8. I have personally never paid attention to times. And remember terrain and ellevation will effect that. Don't compare yourself to anyone. Compare you to you last month or last week etc. It should be how you feel! Do you feel good? Clearer? More positive? How's your mental health? Running is great for mood and person

9. Run in the rain 10. Enjoy it. Just fkn enjoy it. If you're not enjoying it something's wrong. It should be something you start to look forward to. Initially, yes it will be hard but, trust me - it's addictive! Have fun. Smile. Laugh. Pat yourself on the back. Enjoy to run and run to enjoy.
