not inherently bad but personally: - they’re pretty dumb as far as speculation goes, almost all guaranteed to go to 0 long-term - they tend to attract immoral influencers even more so than the ‘legit’, utility coin - volatility even crazier than alts meaning new users got/get rugged even faster than we typically see (couple weeks to couple months vs couple months to couple years) as a positive: they do let you experience the cycles, ebbs and flows of crypto at breakneck speeds which one could argue lets you speedrun gaining experience of markets

I think they tell us something important about the future of how attention is monetized

I figure it's like sports betting for a trending joke/idea and calling the pop-cultural top is winning. It's gambling, but it's not pure chance like a casino would be and it's not betting on teams or players or whatever. Screening for bundling and insiders would be a good idea, but once everyone knows the playing field is level it seems like hands are even more paper. I don't like it personally but it's not like you can ban it.

tough to say — I'm noticing this: memecoins are diverting early-career builders in crypto—especially on solana—away from meaningful software development. many of the profiles I come across are fixated on memecoin trading bots rather than honing their skills in building real products or contributing to engineering teams or open source projects.

I think that they've historically not been great for the reputation of the industry. Sure, they help show volume and activity for investors, but the cost of that has been most non-Web3 native folks having their entire understanding of the technology as a vehicle for fraud, crime, and scammers. Tl;dr, they've helped metrics to move the tech forward, but we'll be facing an uphill battle on the validity of the industry with the general public for years going forward as a result.

They are just a thing we can use. I’m not loving them as the new Zora model for art. I don’t love them for public good projects. I do enjoy buying $dickbutt dips for no reason at all https://warpcast.com/trish/0xcc864d06

Wrong question, it’s “how do memecoins fit into onchain social?” Bc they are here to stay. Memecoins are attention markets for ideas/people/things. They literally assign value to attention and are the most important attention monetization primitive ever created Today we see them as volatile markets for trading but in the future they will be just as much part of social media and content as the like button and For You Feed.

usually if you see a particularly caustic memecoin take it boils down to that meta outperforming whatever they were holding 2023-24
