Increasingly, I don’t think web3 is the next iteration of the web that will replace web2, but rather a fork that will run in parallel. Not a strong opinion yet but something I can’t shake. Also not sure how I feel about it if true. Thoughts?

It depends on what you mean by web2? Most people would say web2 is access to internet and internet based services. If that’s what you’re referring to, yes web3 is a modified internet. Web3 can’t exist without internet. Web3 - A new internet era with emphasis on control (+ often times privacy).

I've been feeling that way too. Do you think that's a better path to success?

What excites me the most is the potential for a culture shift towards building and owning our own work product and data, within thriving communities. But I also remind myself that we’re still human. And greed will continue to exist, even if It shape shifts in the way it shows up, given new social norms and contract

I like your fork reference. Using my analogy: like two threads running in parallel on the same processor (using shared resources, etc). However, I do think web3 will absorb some inefficient sectors caused by web2, but not all.

I’m not a strong maximist on anything, but the concept of giving a fat middle finger of corporates trying to shove down unwanted banner ads in my face gives me pleasure. Most of big tech is ads.

Web3 for me is just blockchain. Blockchain can run anywhere, including web2.

Not sure whether I'd call it a fork but agree that won't replace it. I've always seen it as an extension of the web that adds new capabilities. OAuth didn't fully replace email/password and social media didn't fully replace blogs and newsletters.

web3 is powered by everything web2 built. It’s more akin to the natural adaption of the original web if we didn’t end up with walled gardens during the cloud era boom.

Agree completely. I’ve been trying to make this argument for a while now, and tried to explain it in this blog post last year. https://blog.seanbonner.com/2021/10/26/why-web3/

In my head it is the new OSI layer. It is on top, and sometimes you will use it and sometimes you won’t.

Web 2.0 (a wave of new technologies e.g. AJAX, UGC, social media) didn’t replace the web, it expanded it and made the internet more useful and accessible. I think web3 will similarly make the internet more useful and accessible, giving users greater control of their digital identity, media, and networks.

I'm of the opinion that Web1, Web2, Web3 is just a way of riding on existing mental models, modalities, and memes so people that are most ready to adopt web3's applications are primed

New information distribution paradigms rarely replace. See newspapers and radios. They create new, untapped value - a true 0 to 1.

It’s not so much about the tech itself but the behaviour of the users. Self-custody, filtering and curating your feed etc. are not something that come naturally to most of the web2 crowd. Convenience vs. beneficial (as always).
