Hey running guys, I need some advice. I’m not a runner. And recently had bronchitis. Before the bronchitis I was running around 3,5km. Now I cannot run not even 1km without being out of breath. There is a 5,5km run in mid September. Do you think I prepare for it and run? Or is it too tight and I need more time?

You can start running and walking. And every day you will see how you can run a little more and I believe you can achieve it, don't push yourself too hard, go at a comfortable pace for you in the heart's aerobic zone.

it all depends on the pace you impose to yourself. how fast are you running that 1km? if you slow down does it change for the better?

Considering the scenario you described in the second paragraph, I think you should sit this one out. Again, September is close by.

not medical advice, but that is a ton of time to prepare for a 5k. as long as you don't burn yourself out you should be good

Tried to gradually increase distance over time. Make sure your runs are comfortable and yes, you can walk mid-running, it’s totally fine Before register for the race, check cutoff time, calculate the cutoff pace, and try test that pace for 1k then evaluate your effort first!

I would try to walk at a brisk pace in the near future, and also do breathing exercises under water

Start walking on the same route every day and use Strava to push yourself a little bit harder each time you go. After a few weeks you should be able to jog sections no problem then just keep pushing each day. You should see significant improvements in a month or less

Not sure how long it takes to recover from bronchitis (assuming it's person to person + depends on your habits) but I completed a 5k with ~4 weeks of training with this plan: https://marathonhandbook.com/couch-to-marathon/ I hadn't run for ~5 years due to a knee injury, so was starting from 0 You got this!

Consult a doctor/coach to assess your progress. 3 months might be tight to go from 0 to 5.5km. Prioritize health & safety!

Do you have a fitness tracker? If so start by running at a comfortable (slower) pace, and gradually work your way up. So review your heart rate. Also keep in mind that depending where you live, heat can make things worse. Avoid running in the middle of the day in favour of early morning/late evening runs. gl!

Try running 500m and then walking 500m. Every week you can increase running distance, and reduce walking distance. Don’t push yourself too hard. Do what feels good. You can do your run in September in the same way. Obviously, I’m not professional athlete and I used to smoke a lot. I kinda had similar problem of being out of breath

Start slowly and keep adding up. But most importantly, you need to set your mindset to “I can do anything.”

Take it slow and listen to your body, focus on recovering from bronchitis first. Start with shorter distances and see how you progress.

Build up slowly to avoid injury. Listen to your body, rest when needed, and see how you feel closer to the race. Good luck!

It may be best to give yourself more time to recover and prepare properly for the 5.5km run.
