Damn my dad is tilted about AI. He’s very worried about systemic job losses that will occur. What does one say to this? My whole thinking about the future of work is probably a bit too futuristic and internet/cryptonative for him to understand

he’s not wrong, it will be a very painful transition for a lot of people who don’t see what’s coming long-term though it’s likely more abundance than scarcity, short-term less clear

Look at history. All major technological advancements lead to short term job reductions, disruption, or displacement, but in the long term new jobs are created that we don’t foresee in the present. More here: https://chatgpt.com/share/676b539a-bcb4-8003-a210-58ad3b0908c7

Jobs, money, and people are being rearranged — just like they were when the internet gained traction, except this time it’s faster so it’s more easily noticed. Slightly more scary: we can only opt out of this rearrangement for so long.

Systemic job losses? It's the other way around. There is a global population decline. We will need AI to pick up productivity for all the workers we will not be able to find

If he’s open to it, you could share some examples of areas where humans and AI collaborate (instead of compete), like education, healthcare, or art. Keeping the conversation empathetic and relatable will help bridge the gap between his worries and your futuristic perspective. What’s your approach been so far?

This new Megan fox movie on Netflix hits the nail on the head. Ai is leading to more cost effective labor. Ai and automation are forcing people with basic jobs to be more creative in finding income. It’s nice that union guys can push 1 button 40 times a day and get paid 38$/hour but it can’t last

get him practicing. my dad had the same concern earlier this year. got him onto perplexity as a replacement to Google and he's chilled out, also now thinks he's a wiz at work when anyone has a question or problem (he doesn't tell them he uses it 😂). slowly upgrade to sonnet or gpt then * cursor/replit.

Problem being the future of work is a bit too futuristic and internet/cryptonative for so many people. No easy answer. Uncharted territory. Just have to adapt as best as possible, which is hard for many people who don’t have any time in a society that is designed for maximum output, distractions and compression of time.
