web3 doesn’t have a top of funnel problem, it has a conversion problem web3’s conversion problem is not about onboarding friction, it’s about perceived value gap if potential users see no reason to try your product, it doesn’t matter how frictionless it is

100% agree. This was actually one of the beliefs we went into when we started smousse.org Right now we‘re aiming to help web3 businesses and communities collect and communicate the actualised value from users to new prospective ones. Would be cool to chat sometime to get your thoughts:)

This, most protocols have a PMF issue not a UIUX issue If people don't care to use your product it doesn't matter how good the UIUX is Axie Infinity had millions of daily active users at the peak DESPITE the onboarding being pretty similar to most DeFi protocols

I agree. But the friction continues to be a HuGE factor. Here’s why. Even if you can solve the problem as well as a competitor who isn’t in web3, the friction will force the decision the other way. If your solve is better, it would have to be waaaay better to motivate the desire to work through the friction!

Part of that conversion problem is language. Perceived value gap narrows with language that speaks to and is understood by those not yet onboarded too.

Very good points! I partly think blockchain becomes more like using Docker, where it’s just a technology used in apps. We stop worrying so much about onboarding into Web3 and more about how we utilize Web3 to build better experiences.

Totally agree. I’ve framed this as: web3 doesn’t have a usability problem, it has a usefulness problem

There's a lot of focus on the tech and not enough on the business problem being addressed. Any new tech is adopted because it solves problems. Crypto startups must get better at solving those problems (ie focus on the right ones) and then at articulating their value (ie "these are the solutions we give you").

The good thing is a lot of tooling now exists to make building a product easier Less technical founders now have a meaningful path to building a web3 enabled product—and arguably are better suited to identifying real user needs and providing user friendly solutions

Yes and, a value proposition problem in many instances. Users don’t care to be owners just because they can be. Users care when the product is better and cheaper. Caveat: for creators and profit seekers, ownership makes the product prima facie better.
