Any tips for a beginner runner looking to run a marathon in a year? I’m not running at all currently and am wondering if building a base before I start marathon training is necessary.

if i were going from zero to a marathon in oct 2024, i'd slowly work up to ~30mpw over the next 8 months, then do a marathon training plan for four months or so

totally doable! 🔥 a lot of people go by the "10% rule" (not to increase mileage by more than 10%/week), which.. slight grain of salt.. but maybe gives a vague sense of how gradual the process is might also depend on your current health/fitness level (outside of running) - to some degree, fitness is fitness

There are apps that generate pretty good training programs for completing a race at a certain date given your current form. When I ran my first marathon I bought a Polar V800 watch + HR strap and used their program, super simple bc the watch gives you live instructions during every run so you can just follow those

Slow and steady is the way. Aside from what's already mentioned in this thread, show restraint on trying to increase weekly volume and intensity at the same time. I started running in January and have run >1,100 miles + 2 half marathons this year and will be running my first Marathon in November.

Consistency is key. Run 3x times / week. Be very cautious about adding mileage. Your body is doing a ton of adjustments to turn itself into a runner so keep duration short enough you can stay consistent. Progression is frequency -> duration -> intensity (just the last month or two before your marathon)

All about time and distance, you can pretty much disregard pace. Try not to have big changes in distances week over week. Also, don’t forget to include gels in your training in 2-3months building up to marathon. Finally, find an accountability partner or group. Makes it so much more enjoyable and memorable 🤩

I’d recommend building up mileage before worrying about speed. If you have a lot of time why not get that base.
