"Marooned in Realtime" by Vernor Vinge (RIP) is really excellent. I really like quirky sci-fi detective stories like this, The Caves of Steel, Vimes books from Discworld, Dirk Gently, etc. Do you have any other favorites in this particular sub-genre?

Long drive to Vancouver BC (lots of traffic) and just arrived. Lying down in hotel room thinking I'll relax with a bit of streaming TV. Canada: Nope

New blog post: "The Rise of Protocols" — my reflections from what I've learned from Summer of Protocols. Why protocols are so important and why they're a practical skill for many of us to learn. https://bricolage.io/the-rise-of-protocols/

Ancient cultures all had big rituals around planting crops. Part of it was of course was to plead to the Gods for a good harvest but... I wonder if part of the calculation was a lot of people just wouldn't plant otherwise? Like a lot of lazy people needed a big party to get out in the sun for 2 weeks and plant?

Working on a blog post this morning on protocols — liking my summary of protocols as the CAD Software & Machine tooling for mass manufacturing good outcomes. People/orgs often create bespoke protocols for good outcomes but Capital P Protocols is how we industrialize them.

The Top Gear boys were YouTubers before YouTube. Their slogan "ambitious but rubbish" would be perfect for a YouTube trio today.

It's funny that "predicting traffic jams" from cars is held up as the test of a futurist/sci fi writer. Traffic jams of various sorts have long been common e.g. carts and animals getting to a central market square or the same queuing to get through a city gate.

AI has the densest concentration of startups all chasing the exact same markets that I've ever seen. I'm sure the hyper-competitive founders are excited by that but it's gotta make a lot of the startups feel pretty weird.

My increasing conviction is that LLMs are just another tool in the product/engineering/startup toolkit — they're just too easy to use to be a moat. There's lots of tricks you can learn but they're easy to learn and immediately & widely copied. So the alpha remains in product sense and solving hard problems.
