AI really changes the calculus on API design. It is perfect at verbose but very explicit code but struggles at elegant but high-conceptual-density APIs.

A common way designs fail is the designer eliminates "ugliness" from the design too early, before they understand the space. Similar to Andy Grove's famous management quote — “Let chaos reign, then rein in chaos”. The chaos and ugliness hold great ideas — if you can tolerate them long enough.

Reading LLM summaries vs raw writing has a similar feel to reading a "popular" social media feed vs a chronological feed. Often the summary or highlights is what you want but too much and I start craving all the missing details and serendipity.

@vgr is there a pdf of all the protocols essays? I've been playing with https://notebooklm.google/ and it's quite handy to have a canonical set of resources to insert a specific block of knowledge. I have a notebook I want to mix-in all the protocol ideas.

What are some reliable ways to tell the difference between a system that's breaking down and one where you've just gotten far more sensitive to its shortcomings?

Because electric-sql.com's sync protocol is HTTP, you can do ridiculous things like write a client in Bash

Another easy and would-have-been-tedious-but-for-windsurf PR I whipped out in < 1 hr earlier this morning https://github.com/electric-sql/electric/pull/2184

Experimenting with using Windsurf/Claude to create text-based programs. I ask it to write ad-hoc "prompt code" into different files & I can have it ask me for data which it then writes out. Very fluid and interesting. Been using it for the last week or so to design/run my exercise program.

Claude is really good at asking questions — ChatGPT/Gemini kinda don't.

Been enjoying thinking lately of electric-sql.com as syncable data structures. Postgres supports a huge range of data structures and they're all syncable now with Electric.

Congratulations to Trigger.dev on hitting GA for their realtime product! They're an early adopter of electric-sql.com and it's been great working closely with them. Syncing data in real-time right out of Postgres into your app — it's a thing people! https://x.com/triggerdotdev/status/1863599508283912356

Reading Victorian England novels is interesting as they were busily inventing huge chunks of the modern world. Which in many ways was quite stable until the last 20-30 years or so where we've been busily inventing TBD (we can't seem to stabilize on anything)

Coding with AI is exactly like being a manager — figuring out the right precision of requests to minimize my effort while still ensuring a good outcome. Also learning the qualities of the human/ai I'm managing so I fine-tune the instructions.

Biggest surprise of the night so far is Russia calling in bomb threats in liberal areas: 1. They're not hiding it — using russian emails, etc. 2. Making it very clear they need/want Trump
