We're strongly considering winding down narrowcasting. It's consistently less than 1% of all casts in channels.

yeah there's def some casts I think would work better as narrow casts, just that not enough people are using it like that for some reason e.g. customer support questions for a company that can be casted in the company's channel where employees see it

I use narrow casting a lot and would miss it. It has helped me cast more freely without worrying about spamming my followers and like others mentioned it’s great for asking support questions in product channels I think an indicator on casts to show that you’re seeing it because it’s a narrow cast along with giving recent narrow casts a bit more weight in the feed could help spark more conversation

I think I would narrowcast more but haven't changed my habits yet. I just never even think about it. I swear I'd like it if I started thinking of the site differently. Could it be this type of habit takes a while to take off, but still has real utility?

I was a big fan, but it was never clear to me if narrow casts reached super followers or not, and I did not have some tangible indicator of what actually happens (other than testing with other users, which is not easy). So, I rarely used it. There is a need for some channels not reaching some users, but I think channel muting would be a better approach.

i think this might be a case of a false negative product feature. not only is the narrowcast option not obvious (the “everyone” button just looks like information, not a selector), but even when the user gets to the audience menu, there does not appear to be any benefit to narrowcasting. in fact, on the surface, limiting the audience appears to only be negative. more users might choose it if it said something like “your cast will be seen by 50% more users in this channel more likely to engage with your cast”

The button doesn’t look clickable imo so easy to ignore it. But its value is also limited when the cast still appears in the main feed of your profile. When narrowcasting questions to specific communities, it’d be ideal to have those casts only appear in the replies tab.

would it make sense to be a channel setting instead of a user choice?

this change would pair nicely with the muting channels feature

If you’re not going to turn on narrowcasting by default then ideally would double down on algo changes to show way less casts from channels I don’t follow in the feed (even if I follow the user, doesn’t mean I share all the same interests!)

I've used it very occasionally (niche topic or a location specific channel) but not enough to miss it if you need to wind it down

I don’t use it as much as I should. 1. Do high-signal channels (e.g., /design) have the same average narrowcast percentage? 2. Is there any downside to keeping it?

I’m in that 1 % I do like to be able to get hyper active from time to time without overwhelming the followers. For example narrowcasting to /Farworld etc. around a tournament, or opening packs etc. Think it all depends how the channel changes help the algo learn our casting rhythms and are okay (hopefully) with surge casting from time to time.

I don't use it very much, but I still think it's useful. I like having the option to cast something that will only be appreciated in a specific community without having to worry about the rest of fc being annoyed by it.

never used it on the writer side, feel like it could be useful on the reader side eventually tho as the network scales follow but only show me their casts in ____ channels, or follow but show me all their casts except in _____ channels, for the high level curators

I have never used narrowcasting, and probably never will. So I wouldn’t miss it, personally. But I do wonder if people’s use of it would change under the new channel model? Because once channels become “cozier,” maybe there’d be more incentive to narrowcast?
