genuine question: but what if the internet is down? like what if there is no connectivity, then you can't technically be "onchain" right? i think about this more than i want to admit

yeah this is very misleading. crypto payments still require "systems" that could be down even if the internet and the chain are on. case in point, I bet the POS was down, not visa. you still need a POS, regardless where you are settling.

the internet isn’t one thing that can down versus whatever service the store was using which is more like one thing that being said onchain commerce will likely still involve on centralized services

it's very possible to build onchain systems that are resilient to the internet being down

Decentralized infrastructure will come, but I expect it’ll take a long time.

We can sign a bunch of transactions and share them with each other, and try to get it to an upcoming validator out of band (satellite relay?). 🙃 If internet is down for everyone long term and validators can't communicate then the chain will stop finalizing.

It depends if the internet is just down at the airport store or the entire airport vs the entire world. If your phones at the airport still had internet, on chain transaction could’ve been completed.

Have you come up with any solutions or at least messaging around this? I need answers 🤙🏽

A few years ago, the backbone to our state (Missouri) was down. No internet on any devices. It only took a day to resolve, but it was a weird day. I probably ought to keep more cash on hand than I do.

No system is truly free from downtime, stuff happens. However blockchains are more resilient than a single point of failure. Eg sending crypto usually works more often than smaller pos systems that could go down at a moments notice.

I think, technically, you could still be onchain but not online. You'd just have to have some form of consensus mechanism that operated far, far slower and still enabled people to verify transactions. But the ledger is effectively just a spreadsheet, which doesn't require connectivity to operate. (is my understanding)

Yeah, someone said that alchemy was blocking the eth Denver WiFi; whether that is particularly true or not, that kind of thing can happen which would throw a wrench in whatever system you're using to transact onchain.

Bitcoin has these things where you send money offline. Whoever broadcasts it first, A or B, makes transactions sealed.

most things in their current state would not work, the rough idea is that you can always fall back to mesh communication and reach your target if you go through enough smaller hops that are not "down" or censored, but that's not deployed in any way you'd be able to use today or next year

I think it'd be possible to NFC transfer a signed "claim" against some amount of USDC, that they use when internet is back

Isn’t starlink straight to cell phones the answer to this? They seem to have it working straight to a Samsung phone. Elon has been posting about that this week.
