i respect @balajis.eth, but rarely does he decouple the power/promise of crypto from the collapse/destruction of society as we know it. the dark imagery may appeal to anarchists, but what if we used imagery that appealed to alternative revolutionist personas (eg George Washington)? could we better inspire the masses?

I do agree on presenting the positive vision. But at least for me, I think it’s important to be positive like a pioneer, not a Pollyanna. Good things can happen if we work hard — as opposed to “the status quo is fine and nothing is wrong.” See also: https://warpcast.com/balajis.eth/0x36aac1

We need more than one road (narrative) towards the same objective. Some will be prefer to bike, others to fly, and others to swim. Some will only be capable of doing one of those.

100% agreed - and the entire: „get ready for societal collapse“ rather creates a narrative nobody wants and everybody would hate us for. The truth is, the state will stick around and have some power still. And it‘ll be a very delicate line to walk on for us. I wouldn‘t frame it as us against them

I used to hold this view, then began to view his anarchist cries differently. I took note somewhere, in short felt like his tone shifted from optimistic to anarchist style because there was a validation of views that can make one feel like if we don't turn ship now we never will. Still too intellectual for masses.

I don’t believe in fast, hard failure, but I do believe we may look back and draw a line in the sand that says “this is when everything changed”. My gradual revolution hypothesis is more fully stated here: https://warpcast.com/cassie/0x8d9123

Agree - no need to paint a doomsday scenario to sell technology that could improve things even without that doomsday scenario being part of the picture. Crypto can improve even the most positive version of our status quo.

I think a big part of playing at the edges of culture, tech, etc. is being able to process and synthesize. We are all pioneers, early adopters and builders here, especially in this space. Our culture fortunately/unfortunately rewards bombastic and hyperbolic speaking and writing.

there's a certain paradox to the general message of "we're facing so much collective risk we need more individualism"

history has shown that the general masses will happily ignore any doomsday warnings until it's too late anyways so it's not even that great a motivator for change (¬_¬;)

Negative stances are going to fireback. While being too optimistic is also bad, finding the right balance is where we should stand. I miss a more stoic approach about what this technology could bring to our society.

I would submit that the word anarchist is misused in this post. I agree that overemphasizing doom in the present moment isn’t helpful or healthy (I prefer the lens of possibility) but IMO if the possibility of systemic collapse isn’t present in your analysis rn, it indicates solipsism, nihilism or privilege.

The doom thing is getting old in general. The million dollar bet was dumb as hell. I’m not sure who the dark imagery appeals to but it’s definitely not the message the industry needs to be sending.
