haven't felt like casting in a while with all the bots and memecoins consuming the timeline (not really my thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) but i've been generally more offline since the election happened anyways i also started working on adding links sections to my homepage. here's a new blog post about feeling bad and processing the last couple weeks and trying to pick myself up again (╥_╥) https://ellesho.me/page/website/now/#windows-or-mirrors

"You can post about yourself each and every time, but you have to treat posts on social media as ephemeral. People will follow you because of something they shared at a certain point, and they will stay for what you post after that. The stuff you posted previously is not relevant to most people (unless you are maybe an artist). That's where a website comes into play. A space about yourself that you can put relevant information on, and at best, not just a link to other places you are on. So you are shifting the "center of your personality" away from a social media site to your own." https://pixelde.su/blog/make-your-own-personal-hub/

"We don't have to enclose ourselves in walls of our own making or force users to understand the nuances of every platform and protocol. It's time to give people tools that empower them to make decisions that fit their needs. That is how we truly make the social web open." https://www.augment.ink/bridges-the-last-network-effect/ now that i'm no longer on xitter, i'm also going to be dispersing my social participation better across different major and minor networks so as not to be dependent on one. the aggregated social feed on my homepage is meant to make it so that i can lose any network without really affecting things that much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if u want social follow redundancy with me, i'm on places like https://mastodon.social/@e11e and https://bsky.app/profile/elle.email as well. but i think going forward i'll be more lax with social posting and just post random casual stuff on whatever platform i feel like in the moment. the real important stuff will go on my homepage blog

ventured into the x hellsite to scrub my account for good. and i *only* had to see a few assholes posting "your body, my choice" while i was there (╥_╥) i used tweetback to create an archive site at tweets.riotgoools.com for my old tweets (https://github.com/tweetback/tweetback) then i used a combo of @bradbarrish's delete tha tweets script and tweetxer to get my stuff out of there as fast as possible (took less than an hour to do 11500 tweets this way) https://github.com/bradbarrish/delete-tha-tweets https://gist.github.com/lucahammer/a4d1e957ec9e061e3cccafcbed599e16 unfortunately, i can't fully deactivate and have sit on the username bc that site is a misinformation machine and i don't want someone taking my name to scam ppl

i have a lot of feelings but i'm on no sleep and since i'm casting in this channel i'll keep it on topic: i've been posting more doomer content lately even tho i'd rather focus on good things. but now i expect the enshittification of the web to accelerate. the democrats aren't really better for the web but they are less distracting. when the firehose of trump's shitshow turns on again in january, many will be too distracted daily like last time to do productive things to prevent further enshittifying. it's no coincidence the death date of the internet is often cited as 2016/2017. now he has elon as a sidekick too, so it will be doubly as annoying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ not sure what that means for this channel. "A channel for Very Internet Persons to discuss net culture, intermedia, and having fun online." seems frivolous now as i'm not sure online will be very fun for a while and i'll have to spend more time offline working to insulate my loved ones from the "hardship" that elon is promising. i hope i'm wrong tho

"Links are the lifeblood of the web, and linking to other sites is a declaration of independence. Its a declaration that says, “I am the infrastructure of the web, I am not content, nor am I a product, I am a human and a participant in this great work of humanity we call the Internet”. Linking to other sites is an act of rebellion; but its also an act of meditation, and of ego death - linking to the work of others is a way of celebrating their achievements and by doing so, gaining dignity for yourself and your work. You deserve to be part of the web, not its final destination; and there is respect in knowing that. Its a two way street, a conversation, and a collaboration." i've been working on/thinking about a links page for my homepage. currently, i just have outbound links scattered throughout various areas but i want to do a dedicated page too. do u have a links page on your website? share it below! https://thoughts.melonking.net/thoughts/every-site-needs-a-links-page-why-linking-matters

capping off the last couple days of doomcasting by revisiting this old essay by matthew stadler. it was written in 2007, so way before the social and ai internet we know today but it is interesting to see how the concerns about the web have only been amplified since. it's very interesting to look at his mturk blog project through today's lens and how it has kind of become the template now for low cost content churning and decaying into meaninglessness (╥_╥) "I'm fond of endings, in life as well as art. The lack of an ending cripples the entire apparatus of meaning, suspending beauty, like in sex without a climax, or love without end. Art or love gain shape and meaning for me only when they have ended. While love's endings can be unbearable, the potency of art is that its endings can come again and again, serially, refreshed by endless new beginnings. The web forsakes this essential capacity." https://matthewstadler.org

"Blurring the boundaries between living and consuming in this way transfigures every part of our lives — the tragedy, the hardship, the joy — into something to be watched and commented upon. Imitated but never empathized with." "We are not in a garden like I am in my dreams. We are in a place where entertainment has become the living and those human qualities that were once beyond commodification — attention, creativity, empathy, to name a few — are now capital." a very good essay on the trouble with content and becoming it in this situation we've ended up with. it's important to be aware of who actually benefits the most from such systems so we don't lose ourselves in the process https://internetbedroom.substack.com/p/against-content

"the market dynamics of social media have affected absolutely every corner of the internet and, therefore, “real life” [...] Now all the damned Internet works as a social media platform, and this will shape people’s perception of the world. Just like Marshall McLuhan said: "We shape our tools and then our tools shape us." this piece reminded me of a convo i had last week with someone thru my homepage. they said they wanted to leave the main web and only be on the small internet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ my response was that i didn't think that was possible bc the world is so entangled with the big internet these days. turning away and leaving the tools to bad ppl won't prevent the effects they will have on everyone irl. good ppl need to show good alternative uses for the tools https://www.animanoir.xyz/blog/2024/the-death-state-of-the-internet/
