Just doing a political temperature check on where people are at here on free speech questions. What’s the general attitude toward this attempt to deport a Columbia student protest leader without charging him with anything and despite the fact that he’s a lawful permanent resident?

I'm honestly not sure how anyone can even justify this even a little bit, even if charged with something this would at best a very slippery slope, but as is it's completely undefenseable imo

Fully support civil liberties of as many people as we possibly can, even non-citizens. I generally buy the narrative that making exceptions for due process like this will be leveraged to expand to other demographics too.

Hoping most people here are at least as committed to due process as Anne Coulter (who rightly opposed it)

He needs to be charged and convicted of a felony-level crime before his green card can be revoked. The left will find this obtuse but it may convince some on the right: green card holders are subject to US Taxation so they should at least be afforded the same due process as everyone else.

foreigner here and not living in the US, but following what’s happening and that seems incredibly absurd and scary. Not only the situation itself, but bc of precedents and how much power the administration seems to have?

Unless there’s a whole lot more to the story we don’t know about, it seems rather messed up. Like if he’s being charged with some terrorism plot.

Depends who you ask, I suspect. Still, that case looks like a violation of so many principles of law, it’s hardly a gray zone.

Terrible precedent, and sadly another example of how this time the administration will just act with impunity and dare courts (or anyone) to stop them. Basically cause as much damage as quickly as possible that’s harder to reverse than it is to execute. The slope isn’t slippery it’s coated in grease.

Free speech should be absolutely nonpartisan. To use a popular quote: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” A big red flag is the lack of an actual legitimate crime or charge. Far too often I see bluster about free speech that seems like confusion about private vs public platforms, but this case looks to be an actual free speech infringement & cause for concern. Palestine ≠ Hamas Judaism ≠ Israel ≠ Zionism (Though if you want, you can say that any of these things equal each other, as is your right)
