Whig history — I used to take for granted this historiographical analog to thermodynamics’ arrow of time. But I have also observed the steady decline in the democracy index since the early 2000s, the rise to prominence of illiberal states such as China, the re-election of dark enlightenment-adjacent leaders such as Donald Trump (influenced by JD Vance and Peter Thiel, themselves influenced by Curtis Yarvin who wrote at length against Whig history), the seeming lack of ability for liberal democracies (such as those in Western Europe) to come together, etc. All these trend indicators that make me question whether history does indeed progress (in every acception of the word) toward a more liberal, open, democratic, and tolerant future; or if the Enlightenment period of the 18th century and the temporarily-settled post-colonial world order after WW2 were really transient anomalies, and we are simply now witnessing a reversal to the mean, which I view as the single most powerful force in the universe.

A totally unsurprising and now deleted post from a prominent voice in the ETH community complaining about how terrible Coinbase customer service is Don’t put money in Coinbase you are not comfortable with losing access to at any time, or losing entirely. Do not let them trick you into thinking they are comparable with a bank. They are not. Not on a support level, not on a compliance level, and your money is not insured there. Coinbase does not want to build “better”. They are not somehow virtuous because it’s “onchain”. They want to usurp the existing financial rails and replace them, and with less consumer protections for the little guys To put a point on it: Coinbase does not care about you, full stop. Dealing with them is a reality for most Western crypto users, whether through the dominance of Base in spaces like Farcaster, getting a stable job in the industry or having a place to custody your funds. downstream actors in fragmented networks inevitably become exit liquidity for upstream consolidators, specifically as networks mature protection requires top level liquidity provisioning, lock-up mechanisms & flywheels that align incentives across all lower level network nodes in other words, proper upstream network effects are needed before downstream interface or app level fragmentation can sustain without it, you’ve built a purely zero sum game; a finite game; a game of volatility & attention—one that will inevitably work against 99% of its participants it’s necessary that will build nested systems that can absorb shock at the lowest levels, eg. the creators, users & collectors only they can we begin to remove some “zero-sumness” from the equation; only then can the shrimp survive long enough to mature & reproduce everything else is noise & increasingly so

So thinking through present issues using the (illogical and stupid) logic of the trousered apes in the Whitehouse, all the Uk and Europe has to do is just put tariffs on American imports to fund the immediate defence of Ukraine and commence a medium term rebuild of their defense capabilities.

I scared a woman today and I feel really bad 😔 I was at a McDonald’s in Sao Paolo using the washroom, and I pushed the stall door open because I thought it was open. This woman screamed so loud, I could hear the fear in her voice. I think she thought she was about to get assaulted. Obviously I have accidentally opened stall doors before with people in them but I have never experienced a reaction like that. Really haunting to hear
