Most people seem to think it's bad (incl. me) but would be interested in a contrarian take from someone who thinks it's good

I think it's not good or bad, it just is. People will use the internet to connect in all kinds of ways including to date. The problem IMO is the current set of dating apps, which push people into loops of looking (and paying) but never leaving. Hinge is the only one that's not awful and even that feels predatory.

That’s insane. But…..I could see the benefit being choice…wider array of people and platforms leads to the ability to find a more compatible mate. Stats on divorce and happiness would have to reflect that but that’s my view. I met my wife in 2003 through a friend so I am old school though.

People spend less time IRL, our friends are all over the world, we work remotely and we move around much much more. Knowing this what are the odds the previous patterns should hold?

How about: Online settings may promote more social mobility/contrasting pair-ups. Online, you may better overcome geographical associations of class, have more control over how you come across, more easily overcome biases/inhibiting social barriers. Maybe deeper or better connections are possible.

Why does it matter what the first point of contact is? If you find someone online you will be going out on a date irl soon enough. After that building a relationship is just the same. I doubt the quality of the relationship depends much on how you first meet

bad in the macro, but good if you're the kind of person who thrives in person. the bar is so low to stand out as a socially adept male and approach a woman IRL. what was previously table-stakes is now considered impressive.

i met my gf on instagram. i've been with her for 4 years now. So i guess it's good for me? I think online is generally good for meeting people and making relations. i mean you must've met people through farcaster and apps. It's the online dating websites that are generally really bad imo.

That’s crazy. I would be terrified of being single right now. Seems like any interest in real life is seen as predatory and the only way people connect is online.

There are two short books “The agony of Eros” and “The transparency society” that I really recommend you. In some parts the author (Byung Chul-han) talks about the negative parts of online dating or knowing each other online. (I’m with you on this hehe so idk if it counts)
