A local jeweler is running radio ads saying that you can come in and try on any ring in the store, no questions asked and no locked display cases because “we like you, and we trust you.” Same firm ran a campaign last year about how they had replaced all of their real jewelry in the showroom with exact replicas so you could try on anything “at your convenience.” Never forget that most advertisers think you are very, very stupid.

Honestly probably should have removed the US from the head of world order when they invaded Iraq, but better late than never. 🤷

New Glitch is out! I reflected on one of the most interesting panels I caught at ETH Denver, which focused on the future of digital identity and why biometrics may not be enough. https://www.projectglitch.xyz/p/i-have-seen-the-future-of-identity

Bribery is the status quo in many countries and I believe it’s a skill Westerners should at least attempt to understand for the future If you are in a situation (with a cop or otherwise) where you feel like a bribe might smooth things over, start the conversation by asking “Is there something I can do to resolve this?” and negotiate from there. Cash preferred for now but once Coinbase gets “the next billion” onchain I am confident USDC will also be accepted

This is a great question because the answer to this is very interesting. This is happening because Zelensky has, for a second, entertained the idea that he can go at this war w/out the US and with the help of EU. If such an enterprise succeeds, the repercussions are profound - the global order shifts. US as an empire becomes irrelevant. Empires can bear loss of territory, but not irrelevance. So Ukr and EU must obey whoever sits on the throne in DC, if that can't be ensured nothing matters. The "threat of a good example" applies to the EU too.

A bear case on AI economics: Foreign governments deciding to subsidize local AI companies because of national security interests could have a significant distorting effect on markets. This played out during the 80's with DRAM -- the Japanese government subsidized DRAM manufacturers (grant + cheap loans) to spur economic growth. This pushed American companies out of the market entirely. It seems likely there will be Chinese companies that are willing to indefinitely sell LLM inference for significantly below the cost to operate, because the government will backstop their losses. No VC's can compete with sovereign governments. It's worth noting however that in the end, the massive DRAM investments in Asian eventually lead to a global oversupply in the 90s, and a collapse in Japanese semiconductor companies. Partially caused the "lost decades" of economic stagnation.
