I think the reason for this absolute hatred of crypto is that the predominant modern leftist mindset depends on a belief in governance making everything better how to fix healthcare? more government involvement how to fix income inequality? more government involvement crypto is an oil and water situation when it comes to this mindset one of the most OBVIOUS governmental duties is issuing currency crypto being legitimate would mean that this, a basic core use case of governments, is outperformed by the free market it's easier to block out the possibility of this being true than to adjust your fundamental worldviews

also this isn't an "all leftists" thing btw I know there are reasonable leftists in crypto and I share many of their views (Google "Bitcoin and Marx's Theory of History") I'm talking about the popular Bluesky/Reddit branch of the movement

Yes it is absolutely this government worship and not the fact that for all the money sunk into this there has been very little actual value creation and some of the industry’s most well known figures are unrepentant scammers If your logic was sound these people would like crypto because it further entrenches USD dominance via stables. More people hold and transact in dollars thanks to USDT and USDC (flaws with underlying reserves aside)

Still I can’t see why anyone here cares about block lists. This isn’t “government,” it’s literally free association! Some folks freely created lists of who they don’t want to associate with and people can opt-in to those things if they so choose. I would use a blocklist that stopped me from seeing CSAM or murder content. And I would block or mute someone like Elon or Trump, because if I ever need to know something they’ve said, I can be notified by journalists and then unmute them to confirm for myself. Blanked blocking, without any thought, is intellectually lazy, yes, but it’s opt-in. So let people be intellectually lazy; unless you want to be an authoritarian yourself

as someone who is pretty far left for crypto, I would say from a regular citizen standpoint the hatred comes from the kind of people they associate with crypto. asshole bros who only care about money etc

There have been a lot of great replies, but as long as the main crypto use case is of an anarcho capitalism ethos where people prey on the exit liquidity of the next fool you'll never get tankies (those of the top left political spectrum) interested in crypto.

though lots of crypto also thinks governance is the way forward. (Not government but dao and votes etc) i see a lot of “let’s figure out governance first then build” I say fuck that. build first. Govern once there is something to govern.

It fixes all of these by removing the predatory third parties and governments which are currently middlemanning and taxing each of these systems. Blockchain also fixes the issue of transparency. The problem is people, evil people, who run the governments.

Until we’ve removed the power of capital, neither state, nor free market interventions can ever serve the people. That’s what I find funny about these arguments. Neither side gets it. Crypto and decentralization provide the tools to undermine the dumb ideas of their creators, fortunately. But the “free market” is only possible without capitalism.

I don't blame people for hating crypto when all they see is obnoxious degen culture. Nothing political there. This culture needs to be excised from our communities in favor of cypherpunk + regen ideas.

Bitcoin+marx theory of history was such an interesting read Not sure if they hate crypto because it’s anti government, maybe they do idk, I think it might be more because it is often tangential to and praised by figures who would probably be considered to be far right or neoliberal by these people (tbh I’d say Elon and Vivek, now Trump) It’s a shame though because it’s neutral tech, but I guess they really are just opposed to the existence of ERC 721 tokens lol
