In video calls, do you default to camera off or camera on? Why? Does it differ depending on who you’re meeting?

Depends. I like to pace on calls so I prefer to be off camera and I usually do that for people I’m comfortable with and know that about me. I usually defer to the other person in 1:1s, especially when I’m just meeting someone.

Off, because I spend too much time looking at myself and can't focus. Parable of Narcissus and all that.

Meetings with more than two people all with camera off I have found super stilted and painful. Fine if it’s a very large group with a clear meeting leader, but general conversation / ideation needs faces to see who wants to talk, when they’ve finished etc. gd to turn off self view to prevent fatigue.

Camera always on for 1:1s, it shows the respect for the other IMO.

Camera on at first. Then stealth mode as soon as everyone arrives. Pure alpha shark lurking in the shadows, judging, waiting for the right moment to strike. And when you get a snide no camera comment from Greg just say “video is lagging”

Camera off, unless it's someone new – there's a cognitive overhead to a camera, especially for women: https://www.psypost.org/2021/12/having-your-camera-on-during-virtual-meetings-promotes-zoom-fatigue-especially-among-women-and-newer-employees-62214

Always camera on! Just feels more personal. Unless it is a phone call where I'm walking and talking to enjoy the nature a little bit

If we are familiar enough to call each other on phone, no camera needed. Funny how that is a rare thing now. If it’s a group, i.e., would have been an in person meeting — then camera on. Don’t believe the majority of workforce or technology has got to a point where we can eliminate the importance of our biology y

For almost 2 years it was camera off. Now for almost 6 months it is default camera on and it’s never been better. My concentration on calls is higher and conversations are better. Plus I feel less zoom fatigue
