Excellent post! I noticed a very small typo if you’d like to fix it for clarity: I imagine you meant “most”

On point. Just a note on Cypherpunk. True that it had “broader techno-libertarian ethos” but this description minimizes the contribution of the then-radical left, which I’d argue is a pattern that can be connected to why the current broad left don’t see themselves aligned with this movement. Anarchist, socialist, even communist ideas are hard coded in Cypherpunk. We need look no further than the woman who coined the term itself: Jude Milhon, active in civil rights, feminism, radical health care, supportive of New Left ideals, and lived communally. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jude_Milhon Great read. Just advocating for a more inclusive narrative that reflects who really helped shape the ethos and adds nuance to the distortion that this shit was birthed by a bunch of libertarian bros.

"The crypto industry is uniquely international, and so immigration law is crypto law. Which politicians, and which countries, recognize this?" YES. The first time crypto really "clicked" with me was when I realized how important it is/will be for immigrants and asylum seekers. "Crypto friendly" is more than 💵

if the goal is to create technology that is resilient to government intervention, then the legal status of this technology should be irrelevant — a regime that is against such technology paradoxically creates better incentives for its development, whereas the opposite allows external dependencies to creep in

There's an election and you equally dislike both candidates. One says they support crypto. Which one do you pick?

This is a good principle generally. Though you could argue that, unlike other issues which are more perennial, this is a make or break moment for crypto. Other issues may always be relitigated in future elections, in either direction, but crypto-as-cryptocurrency cannot. Because it's financial infrastructure and once these things are embedded there's no going back. Another thing you say is that support for crypto now doesn't mean support later. This applies to every issue though. It's an age-old politician thing. Not specific to crypto. But like I said above, crypto-as-cryptocurrency is much more difficult to roll back once it's embedded. So support in the early innings is disproportionately valuable. *hits cast and waits to be demolished by V*

Do you see an appreciable difference between choosing political allegiances based on who espouses pro-crypto rhetoric and boycotting political support based on who supports anti-crypto policies?

It's unclear that any political party out there would support true anonymous online payments, sadly. The political pandering seems to be mostly aimed at the casino parts.

I agree conceptually with the ideals you've laid out, but it reads like an “all or nothing” call on Washington, which history would suggest would lead to slower adoption and more attack. Advancing a goal via modern politics requires compromise, choosing one’s battles and securing wins with new allies when possible. How would you propose people work within the existing system to take steps towards the ideal state, without making any concessions?
