A very underrated flippening: It feels like these days when open source software devs make software with UIs *that runs locally*, a lot of the time the UI is built *as a webpage* and you access it by going to localhost:3030

As opposed to…? Fat native GUIs? It feels like open source has slowly abandoned app categories that need the latter. Last one I can recall downloading is Inkscape. The localhost webpage model seems mostly for text heavy UIs. I haven’t seen rich graphic UIs in that style.

I actually like it, much lighter than an Electron UI for example, and more portable. The web browser is the ultimate compatibility platform.

With Progressive Web Apps being more of a thing, I don't see this changing back.

the pendulum might swing back the other way once OS internalizes content/software creation. in fact I find it interesting that native apps can get to be 10x the size of the OS they're running on.

Yep, why not just make it be a webpage instead of running it local if you’re not going to take advantage of benefits of a local UI. Building it this way, you still have the constraints of amount of data and need for call backs, just closer, building a real local UI adds so much more power.

I love to see it. As a dev, I can use one stack - my favorite stack - for UIs no matter what language my program is written in.

Yes, it seems that these days, many open source software developers are focusing on developing software with a user interface that runs locally. Using localhost to access website interfaces is becoming a popular trend in the software development community.
