I don’t know a ton about Ross Ulbricht. Reasonable friends of mine outside of crypto are appalled, noting that he attempted murder. Reasonable friends of mine within crypto are celebrating. I get the divisiveness of the dark money aspect here (the for and against). But is the murder part true?

Apparently he paid $650k of Bitcoin to pay for 5 assassinations But the case was thrown out because the agents investigating it tried to pocket the BTC which kinda leaves it up in the air (Based on very little exposure to the topic)

Horrible poll to run: whose post-criminal conviction career does the American public desire the most after Ross Ulbricht's pardon? In no particular order, - Chuck Colson - Michael Vick - Martin Shkreli - Michael Milken - Bernie Madoff - P. Diddy - R. Kelly - T.I. - Harvey Weinstein - Jeffrey Epstein

Nuance but either way 1 he was never convicted and 2 the statue for conspiring to have a murder committed without that murder being committed is 10 years he's served 12. But it's way more nuanced than did he or did he not

Apparently it is true and on chain, but appears it may have been entrapment? From what l know. @asenderling.eth knows more. He could be charged separately for that perhaps.

I wonder how much money he still has. He certainly has a bag of btc somewhere.. And indeed he did try to commit some murders. Not sure if I rejoice or not atm. A really good book about the story is from Nick Bilton American Kingpin Book · 2017 https://nook.social/content/cb5a564b-d983-4a7f-9aeb-51aad20b1722

Maybe a convenient incidental. With someone like this who creates a novel situation like this I’m of the mind it makes sense hire those people. Criminals elsewhere are often quite clever, might as well leverage that

he was never convicted of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire (and nobody was hurt). there are some details that make it very unclear what happened, including the gov making things up. regardless, most supporters simply believe that his sentencing was overly harsh and that he has shown genuine remorse. https://warpcast.com/matthewb/0x677a1800

it is valid to say that someone sent messages about murder, but one needs to exculpate everyone with that capacity to send messages, of which there are multiple bad faith actors, beyond a doubt.

@tldr the "free ross" movement is this generation's "hack the planet" version of the "free kevin" from the 1990s The murder part is true and is regarded as an inconvenient truth b/c thought two of the six "hits" were FBI agents trying to entrap him. He was pardoned literally due to the unconditional support of the libertarian movement for Trump this past election. I guess when you control the House, executive branch, and judicial system, you can shape policy however you see fit. It certainly feels like we're approaching a technocratic plutocracy every day in 2025.

Yea I’ve been stuck here as well. By I believe most standards he is a criminal (I might get lynched here for saying this, but yolo). Maybe didn’t deserve as harsh of a sentence. But he allowed illegal commerce knowingly and willingly.

Regardless of the minutia of the crimes, the fact remains that he had the desire to pay money so that other human beings would be killed to further his interests.

He probably should not have reached for the blicky, but it seems he also was not particularly fairly treated by an incompetent or corrupt justice system. Hard to say who is right.

To see people cheer for RU’s release makes me ill. 6 people died from opioids bought on SR. My sister died of opioids. Her son took his life because of opioids. Crypto has devolved into a sea of morale depravity. The so called industry is nothing more than a cabal of society’s worst. Following crypto requires logging into a cesspool. Then eating spoonfuls of shit fed by monsters risen from gutter slime.

Ross Ulbricht's case is divisive. He wasn't prosecuted for attempted murder in court, leaving its validity unclear. It's vital to review the facts critically before forming an opinion.
