how much money do you have to make to stop being paranoid about accidentally moving something in a hotel fridge?

can you imagine if the paper squares that people put on their tongues with which America once tried to torture enemies were legal (it would be so bad for shareholder value)

“As We May Think” (1945) proposes organizing information through associative indexing, which influenced the creation of hypertext (in turn, the concept of hyperlinks!) with information overload and social media brainrot today, cognitive function is in decline. we are ripe for another breakthrough in how we optimize interactions with information to the extent our organic memory can’t bear (including converting into cyborgs obviously)🤖 https://worrydream.com/refs/Bush%20-%20As%20We%20May%20Think%20(Life%20Magazine%209-10-1945).pdf

POTUS to target Perkins Coie, Paul Weiss, and Covington & Burling in latest revenge. “There are going to be a lot of law firms that we’re going to be going after.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/03/18/trump-law-firms-revenge/

it’s interesting to look back on “The Californian Ideology” (1995) and realize today’s Silicon Valley culture has been a long-time coming the product of the hippies combining with the yuppies, the New Right and the New Left, techies remain pessimistic in deed that technology would provide a future meaningfully more democratized, despite brighter and loftier rhetoric. the digerati— tech elites— are merely new winners of the same old game with the same old rules https://monoskop.org/images/d/dc/Barbrook_Richard_Cameron_Andy_1996_The_Californian_Ideology.pdf

woke up today thinking about consumerism, the concept of success, the intergenerational economic decline, etc, and serendipitously came across this essay by John Perry Barlow (2001) take what you need, leave what you don’t :) https://w2.eff.org/Misc/Publications/John_Perry_Barlow/HTML/The_Pursuit_of_Emptyness.html

Red River (1948) by Howard Hawks one of the earliest mainstream films featuring method acting (by Montgomery Clift), which reshaped Hollywood masculinity to more intellectually and morally textured profiles. so very into it. i’ve not had enough cattle-driving movies featuring sensitive brooding cowboys in my life🤠💕 watch it for Monty or the on-screen cattle stampede

a human might go to Disneyland in a few stages 1. smol; taken by parents 2. adult; watching other children and realizing once again how much your parents have done for you 3. pay it forward to another smol human so it goes round and round like the King Arthur Carousel 🎠

A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Elia Kazan thoroughly enjoyed this for commiseration purposes. they’ve been making kings out of rabble rousing boors since all the way back then and i take moderate comfort in remembering that this time is merely no different (my favorite parts are when Patricia Neal exists)
