Deep funding combines two ideas: 1. Value as a graph: instead of asking "how much did X contribute to humanity?", ask "how much of the credit for Y belongs to X?" 2. Distilled human judgement: an open market of AIs fills in all the weights, human jury randomly spot-checks them https://x.com/TheDevanshMehta/status/1867600164502089925 (1) has been a growing paradigm recently, for good reason. Contribution is hard to measure in the abstract: if you ask people how much they would pay to save N birds, they answer $80 for N=2000 and N=200000. "Local" questions like "is A or B more valuable to C?" are much more tractable. AI) to suggest weights for *all* edges, a human jury does detailed analysis on a random subset. Why are Farcaster builders so optimistic when X, Y, and Z bad things exist? My brother, bad is the default. It’s entropy. Failure is the most likely outcome when building something new. If you’re not a definite optimist, you’ve got no chance in making it happen. Even if you’re a rational person, you have to be willing to suspend belief just enough to make the bet despite all the bad. And then it’s just week of week progress and try not to die (mostly figuratively). For years.

A lot of chatter recently about Farcaster, marketing and expanding beyond crypto I have yet to see a crisp definition of: 1. What problem does Farcaster solve for people outside of crypto today? 2. What evidence exists that existing at-scale free social networks and paid creator tools / platforms are insufficient in serving these people? 3. Assuming this population exists, what channel (i.e. tactics) do you market Farcaster to said people? I'm not asking for free work, fwiw. It's our job to figure to this out (we don't have an answer for this question ourselves). But hiring a "marketing team" when you don't have an answer to this question is not going to solve the problem. Marketing works great when you have a clear value prop and target market and channel.

My hot take re "too much investment in infra": there's too much investment in *some kinds of infra* and not enough in others, and what's actually going on is, people want to invest in "the casino" but still feel good about themselves, so they invest in the subset of infra that gets spillover profits from the casino.
