a common theme across the 50+ interviews we've done in the last 10 days is that it is HARD for new users to get started, know where to cast, find their footing and like-minded people. starter packs, /gmfarcaster, FC newsletters, and finding a "onboarding buddy" help — what else? what needs to be better? how?

a non-crypto friend i onboarded was bummed when channels went members only. she was getting a lot of engagement in channels but found it too onerous trying to get accepted to big channels as a smaller account. casting into the void otherwise.

Channels should be nurtured, new users should be able to post in what they think are the right places. Modding spam and off topic is still necessary but "members only" posting is too restrictive imo. Bots that recast affinitized content to the appropriate channels would/will help. Make /every/channel/a/repo kinda vibes

channels helped the most for knowing where to cast and find content by topic. I liked the reddit x twitter vibe I use them a lot less now because I can’t cast in most relevant channels and idk how to get access without them you default to casting on your own profile and the reach for new users will be close to 0 and only worse as total fc users grow the experience is also different for ppl that arrive already knowing ppl here vs not For totally new ppl I imagine it’s like going to a house party where you don’t know anyone and they’re all yelling warplet and you have no idea wtf they’re talking about at parties it’s nice to have someone make some relevant intros and play connector. and if ur the one throwing the party it’s being a good host

Channels support newbies. It's where we find non-tech content we can understand and contribute to. We find our first frens and community. Helping channel owners and mods create the best channel possible benefits everyone. Encourage average users to launch channels so more voices emerge as leaders. Channel academy, maybe?

We need something similar to starter packs for accounts for channels as well. Like an index of channels, thematically grouped with a short info about each. Or some semantic connections between related channels (example: art-related). Also would be great to think about porting social graphs from elsewhere when starting out on Farcaster, easiest would be Rodeo. Not sure how that is technically possible, but having the same connections as a starter here automatically (or as an option when onboarding) would help a lot not having the feeling you have to start from 0.

big problem for new accounts is "not being/feeling seen". likes, recasts, etc. are good to gauge this, but ppl feel stingy on this front on warpcast (note: i agree no one is entitled to another person's attention) i like how twitter include views for every layer in the thread. is there a reason it doesn't show up by default for casts unless they hit a certain threshold?

we need to reward FCers for helping new people find their way at least similar to the way we reward good content--even if it's in much smaller form. there's no algo to do that like rewards, but imagine if we had 30-50 on call while on FC to do that and we rewarded them monetarily. give them a tag or icon and tell newcomers to look for that icon. we need a known place, nearly universally approved (channel?) for newcomers to go and ask their questions.

When I joined there was a group for newbies run by @stellabelle that was super helpful. Since it was part of the group's purpose people could ask random newbie questions and get helpful responses. Maybe a channel like that which people are directed to during onboarding. I think it's confusing for a new person to not know where to post something like that then you look up /farcaster and can't post there 😅

I think that a while back, someone had a cast about having an "onboarding buddy" as in when you onboard someone you take a couple weeks or a month to show them around, and everyone I've onboarded so far, I've done this, but at one point it gets hard, and of course no official way to implement this without it seeming like a kindergarten, but maybe more people who onboard their friends should do this what do you think?

i think farcasters have too many insider jokes, that don't look welcoming at all, even the mention of them to new users is off-putting

I think it would be helpful to teach people how to be a better onboarding buddy. Crypto has had a lot of changes from even when I first joined, it’s confusing to even know what to do to help people bc how do you explain and guide them through all the crypto related stuff on here (and out there) in a safe way without hand holding?

Standard “find your friends” flow or banner somewhere in app. At least two options: - connect a wallet and find all people you’ve transacted with, in n out, maybe 2nd degree too. - connect twitter and find anyone you follow. After this happens, anyone that follows or has interacted with them onchain should get a notif: “John just joined farcaster” If followed and they cast for the first time, “John casted for the first time”.

Accountability. Some bigger accounts have gotten away with blatant lies then when you call them out, you just get blocked and shunned by everyone else. Just because they are a huge account doesn’t mean they aren’t dishonest. Those bigger accounts that are arrogant and do whatever they want, aka the creator of Moxie, make the rest of us disheartened. Getting told I’m lying when he’s lying. Obviously those will believe the bigger accounts because we are SUPPOSE TO TRUST THEM. Check and balance. Lower accounts and ones starting always getting their wrists slapped so to speak on this app. What about the big accounts? They need to be kept in check too. Having Dan or anyone call them out and say “No I didn’t create warpcast for you to scam and shame”. Bigger accounts need to be analyzed just as much as the little ones. Stick up for us little accounts against Jason. He’s created lots of issues and when you nicely try to talk, he won’t have it.

daily prompted actions we focus a lot on delivering content to users, but what people crave is attention (or maybe I'm just speaking for myself lol but Farcaster clicked once I started posting with purpose and people responded)
