Genuine question: What is the average Joe using LLMs for today? Haven’t found it to be very useful outside of coding but i must be missing something if cutting edge AI models keep topping the App Store charts

My dad's name is Joe, and he mentioned out of the blue how he loves the gemini summaries at the top of his google searches. Esp when it's a "how to do something" search I use AI quite a lot for researching and actively recommend it to ANYONE who is having trouble diagnosing or working through a medical issue

"Understand the universe", am I the only one that finds everything Musk touches waxes lyrical, sounds cheesy at best and definitely not epic or moving ? I don't get this vibe lol, I do believe in the ability of engineering to accomplish great design and feats. However the way Musk phrases his intent often sounds so ridiculous lol.

my dad uses chatgpt now, which is mind blowing as it's the first new tech he's adopted in ~10 years. guy still checks yahoo news daily lmao. he uses it for dad things: home improvement, aviation questions (private pilot), stock market research, etc.

Examples: 1. It’s my cooking coach, and “household management knowledge assistant” — tells me how to solve most any issue / plan for anything related to home management, personal finance, fitness, travel, etc. 2. Conflict resolution guidance: It can help solve tricky interpersonal issues that you want to keep private — including stuff with yourself 3. Curiosity partner: learn about anything new 4. Language : learning assistant - can create an infinite amount of practice, regardless of topic 5. Writing assistant: help critique outlines, identify and fill in argument gaps, transform “voice”, write basic memos / announcements.

Looking at stuff like character.ai it seems like many people are using AI as a “friend” too, just having someone to talk to. Crazy

language learning, cooking, creative brainstorming i think apps like deepseek going to the top of the charts is mostly b/c of twitter bros, don’t think avg joe cares enough

easy to underestimate how much mundane computer work happens at non-coding jobs. i helped my wife walkthrough using deepseek for constructing a spreadsheet for her classroom in 1/5 the time

I use the chat regularly for everyday questions and language learning. Just yesterday, I was looking up how to label fish caught in the wild, haha. But funnily enough, I don’t have a single app in the App Store—sanctions.

I use it a lot for automation workflows, I'd assume that's quite common for people who work corporate jobs these days?
