The world of crypto guys who want to create sovereign states is a wild thing. What’s the warp/farcast view on those freaks? Are some of them here?

yes, meet @balajis.eth who may be the the strongest proponent of network states and is building one starting with network school https://warpcast.com/balajis.eth/0x2aef1435

The network state idea is essentially an Anarchist idea. As a lifelong anarchist I do see the appeal of it but it has crucial ingredients missing. E.g shunning political engagement instead of prioritizing it.

IMO, they are somewhere on a Branch Davidians <> Charter Cities spectrum. Depending on the implementation, they lean one way or the other. Best case is a net positive research spike finds workable paths benefiting the host society. The worst case is an antisocial extractive circle jerk.

I’m not a big fan of Balaji and haven’t read his book, but I find the idea of a post-national (or maybe pan-national) state based on purpose/economic interest rather than geography rather fascinating and a credible possibility.

Networks states at the surface level might seem something new, but it is not, is just a rebranding from old "private states". In essence such project is fascist in nature, and seeks to give much power to corporations rather than individuals. In the crypto social space there are many libertarians and anarcho-capitalists, these people in general are supportive of fascism, so they will cheer such morally bankrupt projects like network states. Fortunately there is also a small contingent of leftwing people that oppose such projects, but the segment is small. As an example probably no member of /cryptoleft is supportive of network states.

"Those freaks" is a little ad hominem and a recipe to disaster in conversation. There is clearly a path and story to it. Critics should probably frame thinking in terms of small countries rather than the US. My ex family is from Barbados where we spent a ton of time and that country is a perfect example of a nation can no longer demographically sustain itself. Many countries are running on fumes at this point trying to operate like the United States with laughably short term economies and no real stability. I'm actually watching Congress and the stablecoin bill carefully because when the U.S. generates a way for private individuals to opt into dollars, I believe every non-G8 country will have no way to finance themselves. We might not get full digital nation states in our lifetime, but if many if these countries fall apart due to not being able to provide nation state services, the private sector will *hopefully* step in. The other options are worst imho.

Is it more or less wild than doing reconstructive brain surgery on an existing country's values and laws? Is it because the freaks want to do it on an uninhabited tropical island somewhere?

Network states seem like a natural transition from physical regional states to me. Obviously can’t happen overnight or even over decades, but there is a reason empires are dead Also, goes without saying, the transition should be democratic
