let's talk about some of the weaknesses of farcaster: 1. there are huge power laws to follower distribution based on if you were here early 2. a lot of followers seem not to be real or are totally inactive 3. a lot of content and conversation is crypto heavy 4. there's much financialization of interactions what else?

1. true of every social media platform 2. yes, probably 250k are automated bots; better to start solving bot- + spam-related problems now than waiting until PMF 3. yes, excited to see devs build apps, frames, actions to diversify content 4. yes, but you can always choose to ignore it like i do 5. not enough A+ content

5. It’s way too hard for new users to break into. It could really use a more refined new user flow. I bet a large majority of the people who churn do so not because the lack of content - but because the lack of feeling seen or heard at all.

I’m very suspicious that I’m constantly conversing with an LLM here, I can’t ignore this and it threatens my interest in the case of WC. My way of overcoming that is I’m just thinking about all the interaction from observation mode

great post, esp point 1. 1. There will always be a benefit to being first to a platform, but it feels on here that it isn't balanced, esp for new users who will struggle to get a power badge (which i think is op tbh). 2. Agreed, I have no idea if someones a bot or just a user on here with no engagement and a distinct way of writing. 3. I do find that there are channels on here which help break it up. You can lurk in whatever channel interests you, though overall I think due to the nature of Farcaster it makes sense why it's heavily crypto based posts. 4. This is both good and bad, good in allowing others to "tip", but it also incentives people to try and rage bait some of the larger accounts into replying... which isn't healthy for anyone Thanks for the post, I feel like we do need to talk about all of these things especially if we want Farcaster to grow!

Confusion over FC vs Warpcast then all this Bountycaster stuff and Orange / Purple DAO / nouns / moxies. Too much complexity.

there is a very real existential threat that it will work out to clubhouse in 10 years or whatever the runway is, a small amount of people will benefit at the expense of the product / community dying

Fully agree with all four. Some additional things that I've observed as a new Farcaster user: 5. Slow loads or timeouts happen frequently 6. Lack of robust, thought-through incentives. The current environment favors bots, spam comments, irrelevant posts like "x $degen"... over quality content. 7. Like @andrei0x309 says, most people just use Warpcast, not Farcaster. Everything ends up centralized and in the hands of a few developers, quite contrary to the Farcaster vision.

1. isn’t that typically the case? and we’ve yet to see how quickly ppl can catch up bc frames caused the one drastic spike so far 2. same as twitter 3. definitely, but i also see a lot of random interesting content to learn from here across many channels, also have a much wider range of what i’m looking at on fc than other social bc algos narrow on the other apps, i love my feed - but i also know i’m someone who loves crypto and loves random content lol 4. this will only continue, social networks w onchain connectivity are essentially economies, both for goods/services and also attention value i’d say one of the weaknesses rn is the cold start problem for beginners, not talking about following but literally coming on the app and not understanding what to do, where to look, how to use all the incredible tools here, etc

Def agree with #3. Much as I love the implications of web3, hearing people talk about it all the time becomes a bit tiresome. Def need more diversity here.

i was early. i am performing worse than very late-stage recruits. i share quality input. i wish it was crypto-heavy. these things they call crypto are not crypto. they are but forks from 2020 by those who hate the real crypto. it's an epistemological bubble.

Farcaster has significant follower bias and inactive accounts. Too much focus on crypto and financialization.

You nailed some essential points. But there are others too: 1 Pay model that might be a huge liability later on 2 Warpacast preferential treatment 3 Farcaster and Warpacast being run by same team 5 Obscurity around feed algorithms 6 Warpacast pushing users towards mobile 7 Too many distracting features that aren't core to social media 8 Lack of genuine content diversity 9 Huge crypto optimism and shilling 10 Some users being boosted too much in feeds and suggestions, feels like there's a list of boosted people 11 Lack of real Open-source quality contributions 12 Even though there are huge numbers of devs on farcaster very few seem to show interest in getting involved in network dev 13 Updates very centralized instead of being an open changelog document like most open platforms, updates are announced and hyped almost every week from personal accounts 14 Too much focus on Warpacast to little on Farcaster. There's definitely much more points for those who dig deep enough.
