I still don’t really understand channels. Should I default to using one? Only if it’s super relevant? Is it a way to reach new people? Or to narrow who among your audience it hits?

you should basically always use channels since it broadcasts to your audience + the channel audience

More than 80% of all casts are made in channels. Your followers should see your cast in their home feed, even if they don't follow the channel you cast in. There's also an option to narrowcast only to channel followers (click “everyone” as shown in screenshot below). In theory, casting in channels should help you reach a larger audience. However, I haven't seen much evidence to support this. Most users primarily engage with their home feed and rarely visit specific channel feeds. I'm also unsure how the Warpcast home feed algo works, so I can't confirm how many users who don't follow you will see your cast if it's made in a channel they follow. In summary, channels currently function more like hashtags but have the potential to evolve into real communities, similar to subreddits or Discord servers.

Cast your general thoughts to home. But if you’re looking for a specific response to something I’d look for channels. The Twitter + Reddit format is confusing at first, you get used to it a bit but it never really goes away.

Use channels whenever possible — it expands your reach to those interested in that topic.

Agree with @phil at this point default to using a channel. There are some people who browse channel feeds, but most stay on home. I personally believe channels will become stronger communities and find their footing, but a little messy at the moment.

I think a channel can help you reach an audience after the cast has been initially been broadcasted to the main feed. I visit some interesting channels multiple times a week and find stuff I wouldn't normally see.

I like to follow topics, not people. Does your cast have a topic? Add a tag (channel) to it.
