How did you get into birdwatching as a hobby?

who's the first person you call (besides Daniel) when you have an idea for Bountycaster?

With investing I loved getting to learn a lot of broad topics and talk to experts in each of those areas, perfect role for someone who has a lot of curiosity. Since working on Bountycaster means going a lot deeper on one area and I have less time for things outside of it

With building I love getting to talk to users directly and get excited about them using the product and giving feedback so we can make it better. It's really fulfilling for me. With investing, that kind of feedback was really removed

What did you like better about mostly investing and what do you like better about mostly building?

Really a case by case basis but I am focused on distribution so casting about Bountycaster is important IMO. Otherwise I don't really attend any events beyond 1-2 conferences a year (FarCon + will be Devcon)

I think a question I ask often is if this is for the company or my own ego and that helps guide me

how do you decide how much time to spend doing social things for work (casting, events, coffee zooms, etc) vs building?

Probably Quantico, Virginia getting to see the DEA and FBI training academies

Probably just how much I love starting my own things (company, fund, etc) since I grew up with that not even being a career option and don't think I can do anything but that going forward now

Some highlights:

- progressive decentralization is ideal i.e. not just having the foundation drop off everything to the community and expect it to work
- smaller working groups are much more efficient
- focus on establishing accountability early on
- foster a culture of being comfortable saying no and having tough conversations ￼

What are your thoughts on onchain social games that encourage public building? Do you believe weekly events featuring these games have significant niche growth potential?

I would love to see more IRL bounties - started seeing some with tree planting, trash cleanup ones

what are some overlooked use cases you wish people would utilize Bountycaster for?

Related: partnerships almost never work and especially harmful for moving fast.

1. If you're a fast-moving startup, most if not all companies will move slower than you. Waiting on another company to hold up their end of the deadline is de-motivating for your team. 

2. Coordinating a "big bang" launch takes a lot of work and usually doesn't make a huge impact.

Instead, a better way to do partnerships:

1. Tell the other party what your plans are and the deadline for being included. Be clear that you will ship whether ready or not.

2. If they miss the deadline but finish a few days / week later, just announce as a follow on.

what's something you've changed your opinion on recently?

@pirosb3 just picked it when building our site and it looked fine to me so we went with it. I personally wasn't trying to spend too much time on the logo and font early on

Why did you choose an uncommon font for the BountyCaster website? Is there a story behind it? 

PS:  Personally I’m not used to this kind of font.😅

Currently interested in learning about complexity science, philosophy, love, theory of computation, epistemology, quantum physics

you’ve been collaborating a lot with the founders — as both an investor and a founder yourself. could you share some surprising work ethic / high agency examples that influenced you?

Sharing my thoughts on the regular question *why don't you just take a cut of the bounty earnings?*

1. Business model doesn't scale well for bounties unless you charge a very large % of the earnings. This is what other platforms do and we don't want to do that (e.g. Replit bounties charges a 25% cash out fee on top of payment fees you might pay internationally, even then it's not profitable for them and is likely a loss leader for their core business)

2. You get involved as an intermediary which means you get roped into disputes and have to deal with way more regulatory components. This means hiring a much larger team to handle all the operations + legal complexities which increases burn. Eventually you might be able to decentralize but this is a long process and you'll be involved at the start

3. We take handling user funds very seriously so would add a lot more overhead for us with security

We want to try a different approach with peer to peer markets since Craigslist + Facebook Marketplace make it work
