How do you answer the question “Where are you from?” As an immigrant who lived in a few countries I find it quite confusing. I assume that the person wants to quickly understand my language/cultural background, so go with “I’m originally from …, lived in A, B, C and now I live in X.”

I’ve only lived in two but always say where I was born (Mexico) and then may add that I grew up in the US.

I still say Lithuania even though now I've lived longer outside of it than in. It's a small country so it's fun seeing people trying to place it on the map in their heads. I also usually follow up that I lived in Berlin for 6 years before coming to the US.

is this conversation happening online or in person? that would make a difference to me online: on call, meet, zoom, etc. i assume it is in most cases to know the timezone and i mention that in person: i don't hear this question much actually, probably because i don't go to conferences and only meet people in my city

I’m in the same boat. Born in one country, citizen of another, studied in a third, and been an expat in two more for the last 15 years. I usually respond with a quiz question (“I was born in the second-smallest country in the world, guess”) to break the ice and avoid having to tell them my entire life story 😅

I always assume its due to my accent and reply with the same pattern of "I am originally from ...".

I lived in illinois and florida growing up - for me it depends on who im talking to. By default I say chicago unless the person is from the florida area then i say that. My main reasoning is imo the average person will have more familiarity with chicago

I usually go by my hometown, Miami. If it’s about where I learned to speak Spanish, or my last name, I mention my parents immigrated from Argentina, and my father’s grandfather immigrated from Italy.

I just go by where I currently reside but as an American I've never resided outside of the US. Otherwise, I'd probably say the US.

I treat it more like a tactical question. The answer defines how you would like to be associated. I usually go with my birthplace. That gives space for telling my life story later on.

I used to lean hard into "but I was born in America" especially in my inner monologue. Had to work hard to unlearn that during the wave of anti-Asian violence. Now I think it's fair to let the asker do the work, especially in a multicultural city. In a less diverse place, I like your formulation a lot
