How do you answer the question  “Where are you from?” 

As an immigrant who lived in a few countries I find it quite confusing. 

I assume that the person wants to quickly understand my language/cultural background, so go with “I’m originally from …, lived in A, B, C and now I live in X.”

I treat it more like a tactical question. The answer defines how you would like to be associated. I usually go with my birthplace. That gives space for telling my life story later on.
