try to argue against content coins from first principles. if a video on tiktok has millions of views, it has value. why should a single platform control that value? why shouldn't that value be explicit? why shouldn't the creator benefit from that value? seems good to me.

one pushback here could be that the millions of tiktok views has value because it means more people get to see the ads that are attached to it; the ad model is how tik tok monetizes > today; 100% of that money goes to the platform; instead, more should go to BOTH the user who saw the ad and the content creator.

I’m willing to test and play but I’m still not sure how this will work. I’m thinking of the past. What if an OG you tube video creator had made a coin of their viral video? How different would creation and ownership look today?!?? Maybe this will be normal in 2030.

I wrote a bit about creator monetization (this is 4 years old!) Most platforms are highly extractive of creators, but the easy mistake to be made is discounting the fully loaded costs of operating your business without those platforms. We're saying pay the creator and the viewer, but what about the other creators that brought those viewers in? Or the viewers that shared to others. Quickly it becomes a massive bookkeeping problem with either fair or arbitrary rules about who gets paid what. Original post is here: https://x.com/gregarious/status/1387063693549084672

value ≠ price not everything of value needs a price tag. intangible value has its place. that said, it’s up to creators. it’s their choice. and that’s fine. but if we really need to coin everything, maybe innovate on token creation? what can we reference as first instance of something? how do we verify?

Agreed with all the points! Still unclear why the answer is forcing speculation onto creators so they can fund their work.

@six @androidsixteen.eth @kia – you smart and fair and skeptical fellows. What's a steelman of the argument that coining content *should* not happen? (Not saying you believe this, just want the strong argument) I understand people who don't *want* it to happen. I understand people who doubt it *will* happen. But I don't get why people believe it *shouldn't* happen. To me it seems strange to want to prohibit entrepreneurs (in my mind that's what creators are) from having access to whatever tools enable them to profit directly from the success of their work, by way of entirely voluntary exchange from their audience.

Don’t think coining content is bad and i love the experimentation but here’s a steel man argument: 1. Not all value is capturable or should be 2. Tokenizing content could kill what’s makes the content valuable - memes benefit from remixing, free sharing and virality 3. Tokens can misalign incentives - do we end up with most content coins being predominantly digital spam, scams and engagement hacks All of these seem like valid criticisms. I don’t think attention and culture should always be monetized. Not all value is ownable

To play DA, on YouTube, creators earn about half the ad revenue, making it explicit and not controlled by a single platform. They also have diverse income streams like endorsements, which aren’t platform-dependent. And a decentralized YT where no one entity controlled that platform wouldn’t require a separate speculative asset to control or price that value necessarily. Coined content isn’t a requirement for decentralized video, could be another cool income stream for a collector and speculator audience

this glosses over the fact that actual economic value is very little of very many participants all of these hyperfinancialization platforms offer the opportunity to break any and all links to that economic web if we lean on lazy/greedy protocols, attention corrodes legitimacy.

Not all content should be coined. Some should be. What I see happening: https://warpcast.com/derek/0xe4231bd5

Yes. People are missing that these markets already exist and coins just open them up to more participants.

100%. Devcoins should be normalized first. So much easier, and so much closer to home, for now.

Totally agree on the problem. Still curious how content coins avoid becoming another form of clout-farming. But worth exploring

There has to be a shift in people’s mental model of wanting someone else to pre-ascribe the value of their creativity. Letting the market determine is better than waiting for some company or benefactor to notice and fund it. Micropayments are huge.

it'd also be cool if super followers automatically got airdropped content coins that'd be a good way to reward super fans + find the true price of attention for the content the other way works too, markets don't lie, as @clanker says
