While it's great that the auto-follow list is no more, the damage has already been done in that any (off-the-shelf) influence-driven algorithm will heavily skew to favor accounts that were on that list.. unless proper adjustments have been made And if you're developing your own proprietary influence-driven algorithm, it's imperative to take this into account cc: @betashop.eth

I don't find this skew a problem in and of itself... the autofollow list had the most interesting accounts who were here early and posted into the void for years to build the network up from nothing they earned their following by jumping on a once-in-a-life distribution opportunity the problem would be a capital score algo that *increased* this skew concretely: take 100 accounts that were on the AF list, calculate their % of social capital of the network in both relative and absolute terms if every month of the algo running those % increased then the algo is worthless if every month of the algo running those % decrease then it's good and yes path dependency exists but that's ok bc those early advantages are decaying

this is the pattern in a certain kind of social media, the high signal / digital soho that eventually goes 'content/creator' ie the clubhouse initial autofollow is where the accounts with millions of followers came from, those accts then got paid to boost rooms etc and it was a race to the bottom re content

I've been wondering what the first influence-driven algo to do this would be none of the Farcaster engagement rankings do it so far, the only data we have on FC is 'autofollow inclusive'

yea a valid point. one short term fix could be just using the square root of the current influence score in order to level the playing field

This "early influencers" feedback loop bias gets propagated and reinforced in pretty much all algos. I'm glad the auto-follow is gone, even if just for the fact now I can continue to onboard people without them complaining their feed is full of stuff they don't care about and leaving shortly after.
