What does "staff level" mean to you? I know the definition that Google used internally but not sure what it meant for anyone else.

Top-tier coding ability, able to take a complex problem with technical difficulty and unknowns and solve it from problem statement to implementation. Has proven both of these skills extensively in the past. Knows how to delegate, and has developed an instinct for solutions and level of effort beyond that of a senior engineer.

dont have a good sense for how’s it’s used within the industry but my own sense is someone that can be will almost always make good decisions - skill / experience in knowing what solutions pair well with what problems - strong grasp of priorities and knowing where to invest resources - can reason about an objective from the highest non technical level all the way to small technical details

this title has always been confusing to me like i know it’s a very high level skilled person the way it’s used but staff always makes me think like, event staff lol so confusing in my brain bc i associate it w like rank & file

The only measurable metric in SWE is how many git commands you have learned. Staff level means you know push, pull, commit, amend, checkout, and interactive cherry-pick.
