What does "staff level" mean to you?

I know the definition that Google used internally but not sure what it meant for anyone else.

most large software companies converge on a similar-ish definition over time. both uber and coinbase had similar career ladders on the IC track. 

uber's rubric distinguished between 2 axes - performance & growth. as a senior eng, that's where I learned (the hard way) high performing seniors are not staff engineers.
