Initially it was to quit smoking and challenge myself to do something I’ve always hated. Now it’s because of the many health benefits I’ve seen over the course of training, the meditative state I can only find while running, and to some extent the community.

started because i got cut from the baseball team in high school kept going out of "pure hate" for being slower than others until i got decent enough (sub 5 mile, sub 10 2 mile, sub 16 5k, sub 33 10k, just short of sub 2:40 full) trying again now out of "pure hate" even though i'm 40 because suddenly everyone's a "runner"

After 30 years of running, I still can’t answer this question in a simple way. But I will try: It structures my life. I love the process of improvement. I get out what I put in. I compete against myself (mostly). I enjoy it 95% of the time. Feeling good afterwards. Community. Winning races or PBs. Setting lofty goals and then achieving them. Knowledge through experience.

there is a difference between "why I started running" and "why I run now". now it run to be a better version of myself every race and since I'm getting older (46) I want to avoid all the health issue that aging causes. I started running 10 years an ago to decrease stress levels and as a challenge between colleagues. then I enjoyed running alone in the nature/silence and adopted it as a sort of meditation.

Definitely started as a form of stress-relief + self-therapy (which holds true today) Now I also find accomplishment in chasing things like world majors Also carbs...
