A few thoughts on replies vs. Quote casts 1. We originally didn't have quote casts for a while. People complained about not having quote casts. 2. We've run 50/50 split tests on the home feed for nearly a year and the current "for you" algorithm—which does bump up some replies—performs better on engagement and retention than previous versions (esp. the following feed with reply bumping). 3. We've since added the following feed for power users to be able to toggle as their default. Very few people actually do this. Stated vs. revealed preference. 4. Naive reply bumping—which we had for a few years—was a relic of when the network literally didn't have new posts for minutes at a time (and I was the one usually filling in the gaps with an open ended question). 5. Naive reply bumping gets abused (remember @briang's livestreams?) and is EXTREMELY confusing for new users. If you think Farcaster in-group or "cabal" vibes are bad, reply bumping for new users makes it way worse.

6. “Bring back reply bumping and reward replies” a. It will reward top-level casts that ask questions (generating a lot of replies) b. Replies inherently get less engagement than top-level casts. The one exception is ratio type replies which will have its own cultural effect. c. I’m old enough to remember that last summer people were complaining about too many replies because of a certain FC meta. :)

Tldr - "we haven't yet found the perfect algorithm that correctly rewards the replies without making them spammy" X is a shithole but replies seem to get more engagement there.

I think you should experiment with the format. For example, having a cast show a top reply, or a mix of top replies that showcase the conversation. My main critique is that QCs reward a sort of interpretation expansion / critique, while good reply surfacing surfaces an actual conversation. Regardless “maybe we need a new client”

Helpful explanation. Makes sense that reply bumping is confusing to new users so I think it’s a smart move to hold off on changing it until there’s a lot more people on the network Do replies with a lot of likes affect how the top level cast is prioritized by the algo?

>> We've since added the following feed for power users to be able to toggle as their default. Very few people actually do this. Stated vs. revealed preference. I am not sure if a lot of people stated this. I am not even sure if a lot of people wanted a following feed. Some power users wanted it and think they use it (like me). But I don't change the default, i just swipe to following when i want.

I understand that it can be tricky to get right (and naive version doesn’t work) but if there’s one area I think it’s worth it for you guys to innovate in it’s figuring out an elegant way to surface the interesting conversations that happen on here No, it’s not something you can copy from Reddit or X but I think it’s worth getting creative and getting it right

i personally hate being quoted (even if it was positive), but that might just be me and not helpful at all… 😂 genuine replies are the only thing that make social media fun imo

Summarily, quote casting stays on as there isn't really any alternative that enhances user experience like it?
