For the average person working in tech, what's their most valuable credential? I suspect for most it's the most "impressive job they've had, with a decay function for how long ago that was".

I would amend slightly: Impressive jobs *gained when respective org was at Peak Selectivity* Eg: Goldman '05 > Goldman '18 Google '09 > Google '19 Facebook '14 > Facebook '20 Coinbase '16 > Coinbase '21 Why? You want to ride the selection filter of great companies, but that filter can go bad during their Fat Times.

I think the most valuable credential is your network. Obviously you have to be the right person for the job in the first place but to differentiate among everyone else who is also right you make sure that you have a lot of people who can recommend you.

I’ve been thinking about this today, knowing that you have an offer letter at any given moment or at least a referral without prior notice from someone at an equivalent position

It's going to be different for everyone and so subject to context. Are you applying to BigCo? Last major position or maybe your recommendations. Are you applying to a startup? Leetcode or whiteboard interview performance. Small stealth startup or tiny team? Personal recommendation. No one size fits all IMO.

I have found that the quality of a team members performance has a direct correlation with the amount of passion the individual has for the work being done. Therefore, considering the communities the individual is active in would say something as to what work they would excel in.

As someone who was in academia and is looking to break into tech... It looks like I'll need to publish commits a lot more regularly to GitHub. 👀

products they helped ship/sell. cherry on top: the products become huge. I wonder if “impressive job” is just noise. imo if you’re in tech your core skills need to be building/selling given basic skills in people management. recent bill run has created too many VP’s who cannot build/sell but v good at politics

Assuming it’s an outward-facing cred, you often see… Startup: - employee # at [x] - built [y] at [x] Big Tech: - [level] at [x] Endogenous creds obv vary greatly.

As a member of IndieDAO, we spend a fair bit of time thinking about this. IMO, nothing beats one (and preferably more) referral(s) from someone who has actually worked with them on a team. Be it product, design or dev, this seems to hold up.

I’d agree with that for the most part. It also adheres to Newton’s First Law of Physics: a body at rest remains at rest, or, if in motion, remains in motion at a constant velocity unless acted on by a net external force… if you’ve got the momentum keep it going, harder to get moving again after stopping.
